Canine Ambassadors Program

With any dog as striking as a Borzoi, owners are bound to get questions from the public about our breed. Some of these questions can come across as silly or even offensive but we should all strive to be ambassadors for the breed and for purebred dogs in general. 

These public interactions are only one way you can be a breed ambassador. 

AKC Canine Ambassador Program

The American Kennel Club has a formal Canine Ambassador Program comprised of a network of volunteers who are experienced dog handlers and are members of AKC-affiliated clubs. Their canine ambassador dog must have also passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. Canine Ambassadors make presentations to children and the community and educate the public on topics that include purebred dogs, safety around dogs, AKC dog sports and events, and responsible dog ownership. Canine Ambassadors may visit many types of places, including schools, youth groups, libraries, and other locations to teach people of all ages, especially children about dogs and Borzoi. The AKC provides Canine Ambassadors with training and outreach materials.

Therapy Dogs

Some owners may also want to give back to the community. Therapy dogs and their owners work together as a team to improve the lives of other people. Given their gentle, calm nature and relatively tall stature, Borzoi make excellent therapy dogs and can go with their owners to schools, hospitals, nursing homes, hospice facilities, libraries, airports and more. Therapy dogs should be tested and certified with a reputable organization. There are several organizations the AKC recognizes for certification.

Therapy dogs are not service dogs or emotional support dogs. Therapy dog visits can also be logged and turned in to the AKC to count toward Therapy Dog titles. For more information on how to become a therapy dog team with your Borzoi, contact our Canine Ambassador Committee Chair.
