General Specials CRITIQUE by Karen Dumke:

The champions who made any of the cuts were all top quality Borzoi. There were some who didn't make even one cut that I also liked , but I had to be aggressive in the elimination process to make the final lineup manageable.

Please be assured that all of the Champions and Veterans who entered the ring at the end of the judging were very exceptional Borzoi, and my only regret is that I didn't have enough awards for all of them

Best of Breed- a true standout in my opinion. He had substance without coarseness, great presence and did not disappoint when he moved. I loved his finely veined and chiseled head, lovely eyes and expression, great bladed bone and smooth lines from his head all the way down his neck and topline to the gradual, balanced fall away. He was true moving from any angle and had an effortless, ground covering stride. A great representative of the breed!

Best of Opposite Sex-An exquisite bitch, extremely feminine yet had good bone and substance. Her movement was a joy to behold. She was perfectly balanced standing and moving. Very elegant, correct topline and gorgeous head

Select Dog-a powerful stallion like dog who commanded your notice. Lovely masculine head, perfectly balanced body, and ground covering yet elegant movement

Select Bitch- A stunningly gorgeous bitch who was eye catching both standing and moving. Her head was lovely and feminine. She was balanced, sound and correct

Awards of Merit (10)- All of my AOM were definitely the "Cream of the Crop ". Although they varied in type, all possessed correct head shape, correct outlines, outstanding movement and depth of quality

Best Puppy was the 9-12 month Puppy Bitch.
Best BBE was the BBE Dog.
Best Veteran, also AOM was the 9 year and older Bitch

1st - handsome red puppy with excellent bone and substance for his age. He had a pleasing head, beautiful movement, true coming and going, correct topline and fall away.

2nd - a very stylish red puppy with a beautiful head, moved well going around the ring, not as well developed as the other puppy at this age, but should do well when mature. Very pretty puppy.

1st - This puppy had excellent substance for his age with solid bone, beautiful depth of chest, lovely outline, moderately angulated, but used himself very well, smooth moving around the ring, true coming and going.

2nd - Very nice moving puppy with a pretty head, and good angulation front and rear. Handsome boy.

3rd - A big puppy with great depth of chest, lovely head, and beautiful type. Soft coming and going at this age, but hopefully will improve with maturity.

4th - Rangy, pretty mover, very pretty head, just needs time to grow into himself.

1st - Very typy brindle dog with excellent side movement, true coming and going, great body and a pleasing head and outline.

2nd - Rangy, but balanced dog with lovely movement and pretty overall type.

1st and WD - A large, competitive class. My first place winner was an Irish marked sable dog that was flawless moving. The head was gorgeous— long , narrow, strong under jaw, dark,and expressive almond shaped eyes. His breed type was outstanding. He was also my winners dog.

2nd and RWD - Although this dog was out of coat, it only served to expose his beautiful, smooth outline. He also had a lovely head, and expression, and demonstrated very sound and ground covering, effortless movement.

3rd - Powerful, balanced dog. Excellent reach and drive. Should do well with maturity.

4th - Very typy sable and white dog. Lovely head and expression. Graceful topline. Moved soundly.

2nd - Another beautiful head and outline. Very true moving with good extension moving around the ring.

3rd - Too much angulation in the rear, but otherwise well made with a graceful outline, gorgeous head and really used herself moving.

4th - Beautiful head with black pigmentation, lovely eye shape and placement. More moderate in angulation, but balanced. Nice mover. A little flat in topline, but acceptable for a bitch.

1st / WB / BOW - A gold bitch with a stunning head, almond shaped eyes and black pigment. Great depth of brisket, lovely long sloping shoulders. Graceful , correct topline. Overall a picture of smooth, shapely lines and excellent quality. She floated around the ring and never stopped showing.

2nd / RWB - A strong contender for first in this class. A gorgeous bitch who also had wonderful shape, movement and attitude. Quality all the way.

3rd - Moved to perfection. Gorgeous outline standing and moving. A little heavier in the head but still very competitive.

4th - Beautiful angulation front and rear, graceful topline. I loved her dark eyes and lovely movement.

First of all, I'd like to thank Betty de la Rosa for travelling so very far with so many baby puppies to show to me. I'd especially like to thank her for the lovely compliment she gave me the next day.

All the babies were so well-behaved and acted as if they'd been showing for years instead of probably only weeks, if at all. The two winners, as well as the other 4 littermates, excelled in layback of shoulder but mostly their lovely LONG upper arms, giving them beautiful sidegait. Brace Class - CRITIQUE by Helen Lee

I was absolutely stunned when I got the judging schedule and saw that there were NINE Braces entered. Oh my! Two were absent but there were still seven present.

While everyone did a good job showing their braces, the first-place pair truly looked like one Borzoi whether moving or standing, as did the second place pair. Third and fourth were not *quite* as coordinated but still performed well.

I must admit, though, that I was puzzled by the fact that nobody was showing with an actual brace clip, which makes how well the dogs did even more amazing. Congratulations to all the exhibitors for having such well-behaved entries.

Stud Dog Class - CRITIQUE by Helen Lee

This is always a difficult class to judge, as is Brood Bitch, because there are so many "moving parts", so to speak. :>) My interpretation of how to judge these classes is to look for the parent's stamp on the puppies but the puppies need to also be better than the parent. I was amazed that there were 9 stud dog entries and I'd like to thank everyone for the honour of examining your precious babies.

There were many lovely "puppies" in this class, so it was difficult to decide upon the placements but the four sires who placed I feel did an exceptional job of replicating themselves but also improving upon themselves.

In the final go-round, my winner had a slight advantage in his outline on the move and his drive off his rear.

SWEEPSTAKES JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS:

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to judge Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes at the 2024 BCOA National Specialty. What an honor! It was a pleasure to see so many lovely puppies and veterans in happy teamwork with their owners and/or handlers. Thank you to all who voted for me and to everyone who brought your borzoi to Pasco.

While it always great to see old friends, I was especially delighted by the number of relatively novice handlers, young families, and people attending their first national specialty. I feel the most urgent issue facing our breed is the need to endow caretakers from the next generations as we oldtimers are aging out of showing and breeding. In addition to new exhibitors, I observed that younger breeders and owners were highly successful. This is good news for borzoi of the future.

REFLECTIONS ON PUPPY SWEEPSTAKES

Overall I was very pleased with the quality of the entry. I did see a few bad bites and unfortunate tails, and more troubling, some apparently rigid toplines. The two most prevalent structural faults I saw – things that I think we as borzoi breeders need to address as we make selections for future litters - were front assemblies set too far forward and lack of rear drive. That being said, I observed much that was deserving of praise. It was a pleasure to have a chance to go over so many of tomorrow's shining stars.

REFLECTIONS ON VETERAN SWEEPSTAKES

On one level it feels inappropriate to judge these lovely veterans as all are beautiful and special in their own ways. Each has his or her honored place in history. Together they represented our breed with elegance and grace. On the day I chose first place in each class, knowing that each was deservedly first in the hearts of their owners and friends. I am deeply appreciative of everyone who entered your Borzoi veterans. Thank you!

This rather petite bitch was in wonderful shape and could easily compete with younger bitches. Moderate angles, a pretty head, and a lovely youthful topline completed the picture. Movement could have been a bit cleaner.

This class had an entry of four. All had very pretty type. The first and second placements could have been easily reversed on any given day. They both had a lovely outline, bone and substance, and were very sound on the down and back. The difference on the day was the winner of this class was moving out a tad more going around the ring. Looking back, by far this was the hardest class to judge.

The first place entry was my Best Junior Dog, who stood beautifully and did not disappoint on the move. Beautiful type and well deserved.

Futurity Senior Dogs, 18 months and under 21 - CRITIQUE by Pam Leichtnam

This class had an entry of four. Every dog in this class was a different type. I judge not only on structure and movement, but on detail. Some had more angulation than others. Some had more top line than others. Some had a better down and back than others AND some had more reach and drive than others. My first place selected in this class had a very pretty head, lovely outline, long beautiful neck, and was very sound coming and going with balanced side gait. His tail went up occasionally and his hock may be a bit taller than what I prefer, but his qualities put him over the top for this win. He also was awarded Best Senior Dog. His type, structure and movement solidified my choice for this award.

This little lady was the only entry in this class. Her outline was lovely, with wonderful bone and substance. She moved around the ring and I said to myself "Oh Wow". Light on her feet and very sound coming and going. When it came time to choose Best Junior Bitch she stood beautifully for a baby girl and moved like she did in her class. Well deserved!

The type on all entries was lovely. My first-place selection had more topline than the second place. The side movement was very nice on both. On the down and back my first placement had a bit wider rear going away than the second place girl. The little girl that placed third was unsure standing in comparison to moving. I feel she will continue to gain more confidence as she progresses with her handler.

All four entries were a bit different in type and outline, although I realized later two were sisters but different in shape. My first place lady was very balanced in movement, with nice angulation and she was Best Senior Bitch. ALL had lovely heads.

FUTURITY JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS:

I am so very grateful to have judged the Futurity for Borzoi Club of America 2024. To be selected by my fellow breeders was truly an honor, not to mention judging at the same national with my first mentor Karen Dumke, Nonsuch, who introduced Bill and I to this majestic breed in 1986, made this assignment that much more special.

I would like to begin by saying my hope was and is, that every exhibitor felt they were treated equally. From the moment each exhibitor entered the ring, I wanted every exhibitor to have the opportunity to show their dog to its finest. I may have given instructions such as, re stack the front or rear, repeat the down and back to move in a straight line, or slow down moving around the ring, in essence, let your borzoi do the work. All did what I asked, and occasionally an exhibitor and I had a chuckle.

The outline of a Borzoi is very important to me. My first impression was looking at each borzoi standing, because you can see structure, top line, front and rear angulation, and detail (for example) head in profile, underjaw, ear set, length of hock, etc. I felt that each of my first placements had many of these traits, whether standing, balanced movement, or sound coming and going. Maybe every first placement did not have it all, but as close to what I thought was correct and what I prefer. With that said, as breeders and exhibitors, in my humble opinion, we need to pay more attention to the down and back and improve the soundness of our breed.

BEST IN FUTURITY: What a thrill to have these four borzoi in the ring at the same time. ALL had lovely things about them. All a different type. In the end I gave the nod for Best in Futurity to the 6-9 month puppy bitch. She was so light on her feet, never put a food down wrong and took my breath away on her movement going around the ring. So well deserved for this baby girl.

BEST OF OPPOSITE IN FUTURITY: My Best of Opposite was the the 9-12 month puppy dog. He has it all for a Borzoi male. Bone and substance, beautiful type and head, balanced movement and very sound. I understand after judging I found out that he won both classes at the Puget Sound Borzoi Specialty, as well as his class in sweepstakes and the regular class at the national. It was nice to be among the other breeder judges who found the same dog.
