Best of Breed – GCHB CH Elista's Cross My Heart – What a handsome classic Borzoi! Beautiful proportions with a wonderful balance of angles. His strong neck flowed into his smooth topline with a correct strong well-muscled loin. Strong masculine head with nice tight ears. Good bone and short hocks. His movement was powerful, smooth flowing, clean on the down and back and very efficient. He was in wonderful physical condition and displayed a male coat in all its glory. I would have liked a lower tail, but everything else was so good.

Best Bred By Exhibitor, Best of Winners and WB – Fairyland UR My Sunshine - The wonderful BBE Bitch. She looked like she stepped out of the Thomas's Observations on Borzoi. My notes say, "A Beauty". Beautiful type, with very balanced angles and short hocks. Her head was wonderful, the sweetest expression with dark, dark eyes, black pigment, and tight high-set small ears. Her movement was clean on the down and back and while her side movement wasn't flashy, it was a very efficient gait, long, low and light. She could trot all day long. My only issue wasn't with her, but her handler had a tendency to hold her head to high and back too far. On the move her natural neck carriage was revealed.

Best of Opposite Sex – GCHS CH Del Sol Oxota Fire and Ice – This bitch had one of the best heads that I judged all week. It's very feminine, with beautiful planes, dark eyes, and very tiny high set ears. She was balanced in all her angles, stood over herself front and rear. Nothing was overdone, and her movement showed it. She was so clean on the down and back, when the handler wasn't racing her, she showed a smooth reaching side gait. My notes say strong movement. This was one bitch that was difficult to find anything disagreeable. I personally didn't care for the grooming on the hocks. Nice low tail.

Select Dog and Best Veteran – GCHG CH. Mielikki Hinote Secret Agent Man RN TKN – A handsome male who has stood the test of time. One of the better, if not the best, male head. Beautiful planes, dark eyes and pigment, strong jaws, and high tight ears. The neck flows beautifully into the shoulders and he had excellence balance of angles with flowing lines. His age was beginning to show in his movement, but he still moved out well, with long low, light strides.

Select Bitch and Best Owner Handled – GHHB DC Jubilee Drop of Golden Sun SC – What an honor to have this elegant 11-year-old senior in my ring. Her lines just flow. She carries her years with grace. Her many beautiful features show strong today. Lovely head and expression with dark eyes and high tight tiny ears. Her gait was sound, effortless, and she can still drive off her rear. It was also special to be able to award this beautiful girl Best Owner Handled. I was happy to see that I'd given two of her get Awards of Merit. A beauty who has also produced beautifully.

Awards of Merit:

GCH CH Jubilee Sambuca Seven – An extremely attractive classic looking male. A beautiful head, great expression, veining, and small high set ears. Strong neck flowing into a wonderful topline. Very balanced in his angles with a stellar return of upper arm. He stood square and strong with his legs in alignment. A strong rear moving with power. You could see him pushing off. On the go round he had a wonderful long, low light stride and a beautiful low tail carriage

GCHB CH Rey's Summerlane Night Wind at Regius – A very impressive male with a strong solid body. Masculine without being coarse. A classic outline, he caught my eye from the beginning. Beautiful head with dark eyes, standout veining, high tight small ears. Everything flowed, neck into nice sloping shoulders, with balanced angles, powerful movement with great reach and drive. His tail was higher than what I personally like.

Elance Truth or Dare – My 7-10 veteran bitch. What a beautiful treasure. Her proportions angles and soundness caught my eye from the beginning. Very nice head, with small high set ears, neck flows into strong shoulders and continues through her flowing topline. She stood so sound. Her movement was very true on the down and back. Her side movement was very smooth with good reach and drive. She had a nice low tail carriage. I was surprised to find out that she wasn't a champion. She's deserving and I hope her owner shows her.

CHB CH Sylvan Elance Mirror Mirror – A very attractive bitch with smooth flow of body and topline. I loved her length of neck and how it flowed into her functional topline. A very pleasing head, with a sweet expression from dark eyes. I'd like a higher ear set. Her angles are balanced, and I loved her short hocks. Her movement was clean, with a reaching side gait. Unfortunately, a high tail detracts from the flowing picture.

GCHS CH Coburn Teine Riju Leisel SC SCN SIN SHDN – This girl looks like she could be a speed demon. A very racy looking bitch who could do her job. A very pretty head with good planes, nice veining, and small high tight ears. Her proportions were balanced, a good length of neck leading into to a nice flow of topline, with good angles. She gaited with good reach, drive, and a beautiful low tail. Best of all was her wonderful condition. She was dutiful but wasn't all that happy that day about being a show dog.

GCHB CH Kyrov's Sword Dance – Nicely presented male who created an attractive picture. His strong neck flowed nicely into his shoulder and wonderfully into his topline, although a little more return of upper arm wouldn't hurt. His stifles were well bent, and he had very nice short hocks. Nice dark eyes, strong jaw line, great expression. I personally would like a higher ear set. His movement was true, clean and he's very light on his feet. His tail carriage was wonderful and low.

DC Jubilee Stonecreek Anisetta SC CA – A very racy looking attractive bitch with great conditioning. She looks like she could run all day and catch what she's chasing. These features moved her into the finals, even though she had some features I would have liked changed. Beautiful expression, good veining, depth of jaw. A very nice long neck and topline. I would have preferred more balance of angles. Moved very well, clean down and back with a driving rear movement and light on her feet on the go round.

GCHB CH Morozova Rey's Summerlane Wind Rider – Attractive striking male, full bodied with great proportions, length of body to height. Nice planes to the head, with good veining, strong jaw. I personally would like more return of upper arm, but he used himself well, with clean movement, powerful side gait. Unfortunately, the high tail detracts from the flowing picture.

CH Vitrina Miss Phryne Fisher – Another slightly smaller, but very racy attractive bitch. When you hear judges talk about a dog asking for it, this girl did with her personality; she was having fun. Beautiful balance of body, with very nice angles. Strong thighs, great muscle tone, a nice tail carriage and wonderful short hocks. Her head is beautiful with a wonderful expression from dark eyes. Her ears are what you want in the breed, tiny, beautiful rose and high set. A wonderful young lady.

AOM and WD – Envious As We Fall – A nice youngster who out-moved all the others in the dog classes. He is in wonderful muscle and condition. This shows in his movement as his down and back was very clean. His side movement was long, low and very smooth. His immaturity shows in that he still has to body up and grow coat. He has a strong masculine head with a very nice expression. He has adequate length of neck and a smooth topline. I really wanted to regroom his topline, so it was better presented. The handler also had a tendency to hold his head to high and back, but his correct neck set showed when moving. I will be interested in seeing how he matures out.

Best Puppy - Kyrov-Rikov A Winters Tale Lereau - A sweetheart and a very promising beauty. In a class of beautiful heads, she had the best. Beautiful veining, dark eyes, and high tight ears. A very nice body with good balance and proportions. A very nice neck and topline. A nice mover with some happy puppy bobbles. Once she was away from her siblings and had a few practice runs she showed what she had. It will be interesting to watch her mature. She should be a star.

Elance Konza No Distance Left - A very promising youngster. Very nice puppy head, good pigment and veining. Nice topline under the puppy coat. Also, a nice balance of front and rear angulation which can be a challenge in a young puppy. His down and back was so very nice and true. Pleasing smooth side movement.

Rikov-Kyrov Twelfth Night - A pleasing young male who is beginning to go through some challenging puppy growth stages. Nice head with good planes, pigment and veining, topped off with small high tight ears. Nice strong neck flowing into good shoulders. At this age and stage, he needs more return of upper arm. It should come when he gets out of his puppy growth stages. His puppy exuberance obscured his down and back but even then, I could see enough to know it's good.

Morozova Rey's Glenlivet - A handsome young male with flowing lines. A nice head with a strong jaw, good pigment and a very nice expression, with oblique set eyes. Ears were high set. His strong long neck flowed smoothly into a correct pleasing topline. Good balance to his angulation. I'll give him teenage leeway in that I'd like a little more upper arm, which hopefully when he matures will improve. Very clean in his movement. I wasn't happy with his high tail but everything else was so good. Also RWD.

A nice pleasing head with good, dark oblique eyes, soft expression, and high tight ears. Still in puppy stages I hope she will develop a stronger rise over the loin. Good movement clean, efficient, and smooth on the go round, hopefully when she gets over her puppy age and stage, her tail carriage will lower.

A long strong neck leading into a strong well-muscled topline and loin. Her angles are just beautiful, she stands so nicely over herself, with a matching angled rear and short hocks. GCHG CH. Mielikki Hinote Secret Agent Man RN TKN – A handsome male who has stood the test of time. One of the better, if not the best, male head. Beautiful planes, dark eyes and pigment, strong jaws, and high tight ears. The neck flows beautifully into the shoulders and he had excellence balance of angles with flowing lines. His age was beginning to show in his movement, but he still moved out well, with long low, light strides. Select Dog and Best Veteran.

What a beautiful treasure. Her proportions angles and soundness caught my eye from the beginning. Very nice head, with small high set ears, neck flows into strong shoulders and continues through her flowing topline. She stood so sound. Her movement was very true on the down and back. Her side movement was very smooth with good reach and drive. She had a nice low tail carriage. I was surprised to find out that she wasn't a champion. She's deserving and I hope her owner shows her. CONFORMATION JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS:

Thank you for giving me the honor of judging, what is for us, the greatest show on earth. I had the most wonderful time. Thank you for attending, despite the post COVID economy, Ukraine war economy, politics and the appalling gas prices. I and those who worked so hard to put on this National appreciate your participation.

I'd like to give a special thanks to my ring stewards, Barbara Danieli and Phyllis Potter, who kept the ring running smoothly and had the sorry task of telling me I still had to cut more for my final cut. I would have loved to have kept more. To the Show Committee, led by Kim Horn Janek and supported by the BCOA Board, thank you. And a special shout out to all those working behind the scenes on all the Facility support. A stellar team lead by Kay Cassella, supported by Region 3 members and Lone Star Borzoi Club members. And finally, a heartfelt thanks to all the show husbands, spouses, partners, and those who made it possible for us to attend this National.

What the "H" was she looking for? Well…: I was looking for a Borzoi that displays the essence of what a Borzoi is, one which could do the job it was created to perform. A tremendous athlete, displaying the features pertaining to power, strength, and speed, while still being the elegant, graceful hound described in our Standard.

I was looking for smooth lines, with balance of angulation (angles), everything fitting together and flowing; not a Borzoi put together by committee. There should be no abruptness in how a Borzoi body flows together. A Borzoi, from the head to tail tip, to me should be a smooth balance of curves, wrapped in a silky coat which encapsulates its strength and power.

On the move, a Borzoi that flows, with a long reaching stride that is low to the ground and light in movement. A long reaching stride is a Borzoi that moves effortlessly with balanced reach, not busy short-stepping stride with lots of action but going nowhere. A low stride is a stride close to the ground and efficient. Upward movement with bounce is wasted energy. Light movement, as in light on its feet versus a lumbering working breed gait.

Overall, what did I find? A lot that was great and some challenges for us as breeders.

We have a type, that's our Standard. What I judged was breeder's Style. A breeder's interpretation of the Standard. I saw a wide variety of styles.

In general, I saw many Borzoi that presented the classical picture of a Borzoi. Good balance of proportions, with flowing lines. They encompassed what is a good Borzoi. I paid special attention to the topline and the ratio of back to loin. My final cuts and then final placements all had good toplines. They stood over themselves and their front legs were under their withers. They were not lacking in upper arm. Their rears were under their ischium, and they weren't over angulated in the rear. They had good balance of angles, especially in the shoulder and upper arm, and they had good bend of stifle. Most had good width between the front legs and good deep chests. I did have a few narrow in front and some with too much sternum. Surprisingly, there were a couple of Borzoi that were noticeably short on leg. I found myself having to go back to them and recheck their proportions.

The vast majority of my winners were sound on the down and back and had good reach and drive on the go round. They were in very good physical condition, with great muscle tone. A few others lived too close to the cookie jar and a couple others must be living in the cookie jar. A shout out to my Triathlon entries. All of them were in fantastic condition.

Our Standard says special emphasis is placed on sound running gear. The largest section of the Standard is the Gait section. Movement was probably the area of greatest disappointment. This is an area which we need to be objective about. Too many were not clean on the down and back. There was noticeable lack of power in driving the dog forward. Some were unstable in the rear, moving close. Others looked like a young girl learning to walk in high heels. Some rear legs were making small circles, instead of following through and pushing off. My notes on one says weak movement, looks fragile. That's not the power described in our Standard. Rears were worse than fronts. There were a few fronts crossing over and a couple wide, some with weak pasterns. With side movement, many especially my higher placing winners had ground covering strides, with good reach, drive and were very smooth throughout their stride. Others may have moved around the ring with great speed, but their down and back were lacking. Those who were short stepping, found themselves out of the ribbons. I'm including feet in here as feet are important to movement. Most were hare shaped, but we did have more cat feet than I expected. There were also feet splayed or splayed out when gaiting. These feet would not hold up under a full day of hunting.

Heads: There's nothing prettier than a Borzoi with beautiful dark eyes, soft expression and smooth planes. It is a finer point of breed type. Over the entire entry there were some very beautiful heads with good eye set and color, good depth and strength of jaw, while still being elegant. But in the class dogs and some class bitches there were too many coarse heads, heads with light round eyes, eyes not set obliquely, eyes I call "staring headlights". There were good heads scattered throughout the dogs, but I didn't have a class of good heads until I got into the bitch competition. I found few missing teeth, none that would eliminate a dog from consideration. An area in which the breed has noticeably improved was teeth occlusion. Bites were tight. It has been an issue in the breed where there's been such a gap between the upper and lower jaw that with the mouth closed, you could put your fingers between the jaws. And I'm happy to say I don't recall a single incident of nasty dirty teeth.

Ears, as are found in most rings, were nice small tight and high set, but there was the usual number of low set, large and hanging ears. It's still an area needing attention.

Sometimes we pay less attention to certain areas within the Standard. One needing our focus is tails. The Standard says "Long, set on and carried low in a graceful curve". Most of my winners had beautiful low carried tails, although sometimes I didn't have a choice. I'm forgiving of higher tail carriage in puppies, but not so in adults. Too many tails were set on and carried high. We seem to be missing the 'low' part of the tail standard.

Grooming. The vast majority of my specials were presented in their full glory, and it was a beautiful sight to behold. In the classes some were what I call 'age and stage', either pertaining to growth stage or coat stage. Being a breeder, I had no problem with out of coat or looking not quite put together. We've all been there. An area that needs some focus is the grooming of toplines. Some had too much groomed in and some were hidden by too much hair. Address the excess hair on the withers, and croup. Don't groom in too much topline. I have no problem with hair on the back of the hocks. What I hate to see is the styling of the hair to create the look of a misshapen hock, the sickle shaped banana shaped hock. All the dogs I examined had clean coats and best of all, no mats. Yes, I have previously judged matted dogs.

Now for a subject that nobody really wants to consider, but I recently did, and a large number of exhibitors need to face: the issues of our mobility and ability to present our dogs. I realized I couldn't let my feelings, ego or desires stand in the way of my dog reaching its full potential. My mobility issues wouldn't allow me to do justice to her. It was time to step back and let someone who better matched to my dog's movement take her on. A Borzoi shouldn't be shown at a walk, but I saw it being done. I saw Borzoi start to move out, then look back for their handler, wanting them to also move out. I saw pussyfooting dogs that may have moved out better if their handler could have run. There's a variety of handling options available, please research them and don't handicap your dogs.

One exhibitor comment that I'd like to note. The exhibitor didn't get the placement they thought their Borzoi deserved. When I explained why, I was told, "But it's a coursing dog." The breed Standard describes every aspect needed for a fully functional Borzoi. Some may course their Borzoi, others may favor the show ring, but the elements that constitute the Borzoi are the same and one does not preclude the other. Being a coursing Borzoi doesn't mean it shouldn't also have the finer breed type features of a Borzoi, nor does being a conformation Borzoi mean it can lack the equipment to be a good coursing Borzoi. I placed numerous Borzoi that were both conformation and performance winning Borzoi.

Remember, no matter what that person in the center of the ring thought, you know you took the best dog home.

Junior Showmanship - CRITIQUE by Prudence Hlatky

Open Class 1st and Best Junior: Raina McCloskey – A very talented youngster. The object of the Juniors is for the dog to be all that the judge sees. The handler should fade into the background. The Best Junior was all about the dog. Her handling of her Borzoi was smooth and breed appropriate. She presented herself and her dog in a very proper and could I say professional manner. She moved her dog at the correct speed, and they worked together as a wonderful team.

Open Class 2nd and Reserve Best Junior: - Hannah McCloskey – A younger handler who had a wonderful presentation. You would never know she was handling a dog almost as tall as her. She made it look effortless. Her presentation and gaiting were breed appropriate and very smooth. She'll be pushing for Best Junior next year.

Sylvan Vivace. Elegance is the word that comes to mind when first viewing this girl. Good length of leg to body ratio, this young female proved sound on the down and back with nice balanced side movement. Pretty length of neck into her well laid-back shoulders, complimented by nice return of upper arm. While I would have preferred a little broader and shorter hock, she used herself well on the go around, and with stiff competition ended up being my choice for Best of Opposite Sex Puppy in Sweepstakes

While he may have lost some of his topline, this well built, substantial Stallion-like hound never put a foot down wrong while on the move, or the down and back, he was my choice for Best Veteran in Sweepstakes.

SWEEPSTAKES JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS:

First, I want to express my gratitude to the membership of the Borzoi Club of America for selecting me to judge their puppies and veterans at the 2020 National Specialty to have been held in Albuquerque, NM. Unfortunately, as you all know, thanks to the COVID issue, and much to the disappointment of many members the 2020 Specialty was canceled. That was the year my husband, Doc and I were to have attended together, making our time in Albuquerque the honeymoon we never had.

Fast forward to 2022, with the BCOA National Specialty held in Mesquite, TX where the honor and the dream of judging our club's National Specialty Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes classes came true for me! It is impossible for me to find the words to adequately demonstrate my appreciation for being given the opportunity to judge this prestigious event!

Sadly, Doc was not in attendance as he passed away unexpectedly and suddenly from stage 4 T-cell peripheral lymphoma in 2021. I was blessed to have both our daughters, Meghann, and Kendra in attendance to support me, and help me celebrate my judging assignment, as well as Doc's and my 43rd Wedding Anniversary!

What a thrill to be able to stand in the ring and judge class after class of puppies that represented the future of our amazing breed. I was pleased to go over so many promising youngsters. It was exciting to examine pups with lovely toplines, beautiful bone, nice, proportioned bodies, scissors bites, and beautiful heads with pleasing expressions, in addition to having sound movement.

I am anxious to watch as these pups mature and are given the opportunity to 'strut their stuff' whether it be in the conformation, coursing, obedience, or agility ring. Thank you again for allowing me this dream come true!

Just thinking about the veterans of our wonderful breed brings a great deal of emotion to the surface for me. To be able to stand in the ring and judge these beautiful dogs, each who entered the ring with grace and style, many with a sparkle in their eye as they experience the joy of once again spending time with their beloved owners in the show ring – well it's beyond words!

Every veteran I put my hands on displayed qualities each of us strive for as breeders in our breeding program. While some may have been 'showing their age' I found that every veteran displayed quiet and kind temperament during examination, while giving it their all when they were asked to move around the ring, some multiple times.

Judging veterans is when you wish you could give every dog in your ring a top award and a kiss on the head … they are such special dogs, and personally, I am thrilled to be part of a club that takes the time to recognize and honor these magnificent creatures who grace our lives.

I wish to thank my friend, Barbara Danieli for the professional job she did as ring steward during my judging assignment, which left me to worry about nothing, and allowed me to focus on my assignment. I also thank my friend, Kim Horn Janek for the outstanding job she did as Specialty Show Chair, in addition to the patience and guidance she offered me during the past year and the run up to my assignment, and lastly, a big thanks to Phyllis Potter for always sharing her beautiful smile and kind words ringside.

In conclusion, I found our breed to be in pretty darn good shape! I saw very few gay or highly carried tails that can distract from the overall image of the dog, especially when on the move. I observed an overall improvement in the rear angulation of our breed, which is nice to see. However, we must always be mindful of the importance of balance in our breed. Improvement of the rears is great, however, if you do not maintain balance with the front assembly i.e., the return of upper arm, this will lead to lack of balance.

I am pleased to say I found very few dogs with multiple missing teeth in either puppy or veteran classes. I did see several dogs with long toenails, and some with splayed feet. It was especially disappointing to examine multiple dogs with dirty teeth. Perhaps it's because I was married to a veterinarian for 43 years, but I find this fact to be shameful, if for no other reason than the effect this lack of care of the teeth can have on the health of the dog.

As a breeder/owner for over forty years, I can honestly say that one of the things that drew me to Borzoi in the first place was their natural beauty! With their natural beauty in mind, it was shocking to put my hands on coats that were 'dull' and 'almost sticky' with powder or chalk. It was especially disappointing to see so many of our dogs, some young and old alike, whose coats were clearly sculpted and shaped! It's one thing to trim or 'clean up' the ears, the feet, and the underline, but to totally shape a dog's outline with scissors and other tools is taking our breed in a direction it should NEVER go! Guard hairs are part of what makes our Borzoi coats beautiful! Perhaps this is an issue that needs to be addressed by our club before it gets out of hand as it has with so many other breeds of dogs seen in AKC conformation competition!

I want to thank everyone who made the trip to Texas, allowing me the opportunity to judge their beautiful babies and veterans. It is a time in my life with Borzoi that I will always cherish!

2nd - A style I love, feminine and effortless on the move. High set tiny ears with pretty head. Between coat which allowed her proper Borzoi outline

3th - Quality bitch in a class full of quality. Was out-moved by the higher placers.

FUTURITY JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS:

Thank you to the BCOA breeders who elected me to judge this year's Futurity classes. The entry was full of promise for the future of our Borzoi and it was an honor to be trusted with this assignment.

Overall quality was lovely and temperaments outstanding.

General notes on this entry:

Almost every entry had a correct bite and there were very few missing teeth. Do pay attention to tooth size when breeding. I had one very weak underjaw on an otherwise nice entry and the placement reflected this.

Heads were overall pleasing with prominent veining. Watch ear size and placement now before it becomes the norm. Bigger is Not better when it comes to ears.

There were too many upright fronts without return of upper arm and narrow fronts. This is especially disturbing when combined with over-angulated rear quarters. Some of these may improve with maturity.

Temperaments were outstanding! This made the assignment an absolute joy.
