2019 National Specialty - Gettysburg, PA - May 14-18, 2019

General Specials CRITIQUE by Kalen Dumke:

The national specialty show this year was well attended with a great variety of types, many puppies, veterans, stud dogs and brood bitches and of course a large entry of juniors! I was thrilled for the opportunity to see and go over so many lovely Borzoi. I appreciate all the exhibitors and spectators that took the time to travel to Gettysburg in order to show their dogs or just participate in being at a national.

BEST OF BREED - GChG Mielikki Hinote Secret Agent Man: This male was a true “stallion” representative of a male Borzoi. He possessed lovely body, depth of chest, head, neck, carriage, movement and that undefinable presence in the ring. Among an outstanding line-up of the cream of our breed he was my choice that day for Best Borzoi.

BEST OF WINNERS - Kyrov’s Sword Dance: This dog came very close to one of my ideal Borzoi. He possessed masculinity without coarseness, fabulous sound movement, a shape that was curvy, yet not overor underdone, and that superb head. Just the type and style that I love.

BEST OF OPPOSITE SEX and BEST OF BREED NATIONAL OWNER-HANDLED SERIES - GCh. Soyara’s Devilish Delilah: This was one of the loveliest bitches that I’ve seen. She was feminine, curvy, with just the correct amount of topline and angulation. Great depth of chest, perfect bone for her size and build, beautiful carriage and that fabulous reach and drive that I love. A shining star in the breed.

SELECT DOG - GChS Fiery Run Rider on the Storm, BCAT: I loved this dog’s style, head, body, movement and quality. He literally floated around the ring with reach and drive. Sound on the down and back he caught my eye from the first. A beautiful dog, he possessed just the right amount of bone and had a narrow, beautifully oval back-skull which is so correct in the breed. Very deserving of this win.

SELECT BITCH - DC GChB Jubilee Drop of Golden Sun, SC: An absolutely stunning white and gold bitch that screamed “quality” from the moment she walked into the ring. She possessed absolutely beautiful conformation, with great body, depth and bone, while still maintaining her femininity. I loved her head and eye and that ground-covering yet oh-so-easy sidegait. Coming and going she never put a foot down wrong. Easily one of the winners of the show.

AWARDS OF MERIT - I’m going to mention in general terms that my AOMs were all absolutely gorgeous specimens of the breed. Although ranging in style and type, every one of them was in the running for recognition at this or any show. It was an honor to have them in my ring. BEST PUPPY Echovesna’s Master of the Universe: A striking young male with gorgeous breed type, lovely conformation, head and superb movement. I predict great things for this youngster.

BEST IN VETERAN CLASSES - DC Wind N’ Satin Dragons Maiden, SC: A small and very feminine bitch with exquisite angulation and movement. She is quality all the way and a wonderful representative of the breed. I appreciate the opportunity to judge her and give her this award.

BEST IN BRED BY EXHIBITOR CLASSES - Elance Ruffles and Truffles: One of my favorites, this bitch is undeniably gorgeous, with movement that is to be envied in the breed. She is not only lovely and feminine but on the move you cannot take your eyes off of her. My choice on the day for best Bred by Exhibitor.

BEST STUD DOG - GCh. Estet Classic Yarolik At Chrysalis: A lovely heavily-bodied dog that sired consistent and very lovely offspring. My choice on the day for my best stud dog. This was a very large class with many wonderful stud dogs and their get.

BEST BROOD BITCH - DC GChB Jubilee Drop of Golden Sun, SC: A gorgeous bitch with the same offspring as was in the ring with the stud dog. A great cross and very deserving of best brood bitch. Again, this was an immense class of quality brood bitches and some delectable offspring.

CLOSING COMMENTS - I would again like to thank the many exhibitors, spectators, handlers and helpers that attended and showed your gorgeous Borzoi. It was an opportunity of a lifetime to see such quality in one place. There were many dogs who won, others who placed and yet more that walked out of the ring without a placement. My hats off to all of you for coming. I appreciated the opportunity to go over each and every dog and can appreciate the time, money and effort it took attending this show. Again thank you for allowing me to Judge the BCOA National Specialty Show 2019!

PUPPY DOGS 6 TO 9 MONTHS CRITIQUE by Kalen Dumke:

1st - Vitrina Endeavor Henry: A red sable dog, very pretty, beautifully angulated front and rear, beautiful head, lovely topline, beautiful sidegait, nice neck set, shoulders and eye. He was very together for his age and age group.

2nd - Katz Riding Shotgun With My Ruger: A dark blue puppy beautifully angulated both front and rear. At this time, a bit flat footed in front, but obviously going through a rapid growth stage. Nice low hocks, a very pleasing and beautiful head, lovely and correct topline, fabulous depth of chest and body length. Overall, he was a very nice and promising boy.

3rd - Blackmoor When Stars Collide at Eidolon: A very pretty, white and gold sable puppy, Shorter coupled, but very together and moves very well, just a bit wide in backskull, could be a bit more angulated in the rear but lovely depth of chest, good bone and a lovely eye.

4th - Klassnij Kashemir Wolkowo: A white and gold sable puppy that looks very young. A lovely puppy, he could have just a bit more underjaw, but superb angulation and a nice topline, wonderful earset. He was just a bit more immature compared to the other puppies in the class, but obviously a quality boy with a lot of potential for growth and size.

PUPPY DOGS 9 TO 12 MONTHS CRITIQUE by Kalen Dumke:

1st - Echovesna’s Master of the Universe: A lovely dog, a bit straight in the upper arm, but lovely shoulder and rear angulation, deep stifle and low hock, lovely head, filled, but not overdone, beautiful, eye, excellent sidegait and topline. A very typey dog.

2nd - Téine Louis Vuitton: A very nice young dog, with quite a lot of topline at this age, but it does not in any way affect his movement. He has a very pretty head with a prominent occipital bone, nice underjaw, lovely eye, beautifully angulated front, balance rear and great depth of chest.

3rd - Sylvan Elance Travertine: A very heavy bodied, mature looking dog, with lovely sidegait, toes in just a bit in the front, which does not in any way affect his movement. He is heavily coated with great texture, exceptional shoulders, rear angulation and depth of stifle.

4th - Naletai Sokolow: This is a very nice young dog with great body, good depth of chest and a pretty head with a prominent occipital bone. Nice topline, angulation and overall balance.

PUPPY DOGS 12 TO 18 MONTHS CRITIQUE by Kalen Dumke:

1st - RunTuff RiverRun Thunder Funk: This was a big white and sable dog with lovely head and great underjaw. He was very pretty, and although, not extremely angulated, well balanced. Nice depth of stifle, proper topline and overall outline was very pleasing.

2nd - Majenkir Bookstor Man for all Seasons: A white and gold dog, although not as refined in the head as my fist place winner, very lovely depth of chest, good topline and front and rear angulation, especially nice rear, impressive sidegait and absolutely sound coming and going.

3rd - Avalon Keep on Dancing: A self-red dog with a black mask, Sound, honest and moderate, but still correct. Pretty headpiece, but could have had a bit more refined back skull, still very pleasing and very typey.

4th - Adrienne Zooropa Massandra Palace: A more refined male, that looked like he had tons of potential for maturity. Very nice angulation both front and rear, pretty head and nice high set ears, a very lovely dark eye, and beautiful pigmentation. Extremely sound with very fluid sidegait.

1st - Starswift Reflections of His Legacy: Big dark Irish marked dogs, very nice, powerful mover, sound on the down and back, good bone. I’d like to see just a bit more fill below the eyes. Good overall conformation and balanced. A very deserving dog.

2nd - Starswift Don’t Stop Me Now, JC: A bit overfilled in the head, slightly roman head, but bite is correct. Good topline, lovely body angulation and bone, good earset and good mover. Very kind eye.

3rd - Starswift Legacy of the Force: more refined male, that is a bit flat in topline, very moderate in angulation, especially in the rear. Possesses lovely earset, a kind eye and good feet.

DOGS, Bred by Exhibitor - CRITIQUE by Kalen Dumke

1st - Del Sol Mission Impossible: A very pretty curvy dog beautifully angulated both front and rear, without being overdone or too straight. He possessed a lovely head, eye, topline, shoulders and had very fluid sidegait.

2nd - Starswift Everlasting Legacy: Very similar to my first place winner, this dog had a good topline, moderate and balanced front and rear angulation, nice head, with a high earset, good depth of chest, lovely reach and drive.

3rd - Estet Classic Timofei: This was a very handsome, heavily bodied, heavily coated male. He had a very pretty head with good underjaw, lovely front and rear angulation and he covered a lot of ground when he moved.

4th - Auroral’s Aquazul: This was a white and gold dog, with a very pleasing topline, front and rear angulation, a nice high earset, and moved with ground covering reach and drive. A very nice dog.

1st - Chrysalis Jubilee Amaro: A big handsome dog, who was well angulated both front and rear. He had a nice low hock, beautiful dark eye and expression, lovely correct topline and outline, smooth fluid sidegait with ground covering reach and drive.

2nd - Kalabria Mielikki RiverRun Beyond the Darkness, SC: A black Irish marked dog, a bit straight in pastern, moderate front and rear angulation, but still pleasing and correct body, with good depth of chest, good length of body, absolutely beautiful head piece with high set ears, and lovely shape to his muzzle.

3rd - Gladkii Veter Once and Future King: This dog was spotted red sable with a lovely head piece, correct body in topline, length and depth of chest. He had moderate angulation both front and rear, with good reach and drive even though he wanted to play. Overall a very pleasing dog.

4th - Mielikki Siege at Blue Mountain: A self-gold dog with a nice head and topline, good angulation both front and rear. He could be a bit more knuckled up in his front feet, but other than that, he had pleasing sidegait, not extreme, but still very correct movement and very fluid.

1st - Kyrov’s Sword Dance: A lovely tri-color dog with beautiful breed type, he had superb bladed bone, angulation and a beautiful topline. His head was stunning, with that sought after roman finish on his nose. The movement was a joy to watch and he was sound coming and going. He was just the type of dog that I love and appreciate. Quality all the way.

2nd - Jubilee Sambuca Seven: A very handsome black-masked red sable with white dog. A bit more moderate in angulation then the first place winner, but still very correct. Incredible carriage and sidegait. Does not put down one foot wrong on the down and back. Lovely headpiece and expression. Screams masculinity. A very competitive male that is destined for great things.

3rd - Laureate Zooropa Adrienne Tango in the Night: A powerful red and white spotted male that carries himself beautifully. He had lovely sidegait with good reach and drive and definite ring “presence”. He had a very correct topline and lovely front and rear angulation.

4th - Paradise Spirit Chariots of Fire: A very mature looking, very lovely white and fawn dog. Wonderful carriage, very nice front and rear angulation, lovely sidegait. Very masculine in appearance.

1st - Vitrina Prime Suspect Tennison: An Irish marked red bitch, beautiful standing with a lovely head, beautiful body, angulation (with low hocks) and topline, head and neckset. I loved her eye and the depth of her muzzle. Beautifully shaped and sculpted head set with high set ears. Full, open reach and drive when she moved.

2nd - Laureate Zooropa it Started with a Kiss: A beautiful tricolored bitch, not quite as angulated as the first place bitch but a superb head, topline, and exceptional depth of chest. A very typey bitch that should do well in any company.

2nd - Jubilee We Have it All: A tri-colored bitch with some ticking. A very nice little bitch and mature for her age. Very sound on the down and back, super reach and drive. A bit tense in the ring, but still showed very well. I would like to see just a bit more roman finish at the end of her nose. Nice high ear set and good depth of stifle.

3rd - Gladkii Veter Coat of Many Colors: A lovely brindle color. Moderate in angulation and topline with wonderful depth of body. Very together when she moves. Super reach and drive. Could stand a bit more roman finish at the end of her nose. Lovely dark eye.

2nd - Del Sol Oxota Chase the Fire: A self-gold fawn bitch, very nice. I would like to see more parallel head planes, having said that she has wonderful roman finish to her nose, good angulation both front and rear, good depth of chest, a very nice and deserving bitch.

3rd - Kansai’z Southern Shores: A big white and gold spotted bitch, I would like to see a bit more underjaw, but a beautiful roman finish, lovely eye and head planes, lovely neckset and topline. Lovely angulation, depth of stifle and sidegait.

4th - Auroral’s Aquafina: A mostly white bitch with gold. Good bone, a wonderful topline and depth of chest. Absolutely beautiful on the move, with great reach and drive. I would like to see just a bit more fill below her eyes, but a typey and deserving bitch.

A bit moderate in angulation, but absolutely true moving, both coming and going, with lovely floating sidegait. She possessed a beautiful head with high set ears, absolutely exquisite roman finish with a deep underjaw. Classic head, with proper parallel planes a very lovely girl. This bitch has incredible breed type which needs to be rewarded so it is not lost to the breed.

2nd - Kyrov’s Scottish Lilt at Horse and Hound: A lovely tri-colored bitch. Very beautiful conformation with a deep body, lovely bone and tons of breed type. Good length of body, with a deep stifle, fabulous reach and drive and very sound moving. A very deserving and competitive bitch in any company.

3rd - Mielikki Gett Off: A self-brindle, a different style and finer boned then the first two placements. I loved her graceful topline, very nice head and high set ears. Good angulation front and rear, beautiful on the move and very true coming and going.

The national specialty show this year was well attended with a great variety of types, many puppies, veterans, stud dogs and brood bitches and of course a large entry of juniors! I was thrilled for the opportunity to see and go over so many lovely Borzoi. I appreciate all the exhibitors and spectators that took the time to travel to Gettysburg in order to show their dogs or just participate in being at a national.

Closing comments… I would again like to thank the many exhibitors, spectators, handlers and helpers that attended and showed your gorgeous Borzoi. It was an opportunity of a lifetime to see such quality in one place. There were many dogs who won, others who placed and yet more that walked out of the ring without a placement. My hats off to all of you for coming. I appreciated the opportunity to go over each and every dog and can appreciate the time, money and effort it took attending this show. Again thank you for allowing me to Judge the BCOA National Specialty Show 2019!

Ch Zharkov Téine Briar, SC – I was happy to see three boys in the 10 and older class; all were beautiful and constituted a testament to their respective breeding programs and owners’ care. The class winner presented a gorgeous picture of a classic Borzoi. He was my Best in Veteran Sweeps winner. He fit the standard to a “t”: sound on the down and back, he had ideal functional running gear, beautiful body, wonderful sidegait, proper neck carriage and a gorgeous head. If one drew a picture of him, it could fit right into one of the historical Russian books on Borzoi. A wonderful specimen of the breed that looked fantastic for his age.

OVERALL SWEEPSTAKES CRITIQUE by Kristina Terra

It was a great pleasure and privilege to judge the 2019 BCOA Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes. Thank you to the membership for selecting me for this honor and thank you to all the exhibitors for letting me go over your beautiful puppies and precious veterans.

The general appearance of the AKC Borzoi standard sets clear priorities for judging our breed: “Special emphasis should be placed on sound running gear, strong neck and jaws, courage and agility, combined with proper condition”. Guided by this statement, I deemed the standard’s descriptions of the shoulders, forelegs, feet, hindquarters, gait, neck and jaws as the most important. The standard mentions strong pasterns twice, so that was another important primary judging criteria for me. Once I found the dogs that satisfied the special emphasis statement, I considered all the other finer points of the standard, while looking for that unmistakable elegance. I mostly saw full dentition and only a couple of bites that were off – kudos to the breeders! Also, the tails seemed to be mostly good—not too many curly ones at all—well done!

I found that it was extremely difficult to judge the veteran sweepstakes. I felt that every single one of the entries deserved to be only first – there was such a depth of quality in the veteran classes. Thank you for showing your gorgeous veterans to me, I will forever remember their soulful eyes, dignified looks and wonderful enthusiasm.

Dual Champion Stakes Dogs, 1 to 4 years - CRITIQUE by Caroline Coile, PhD

1st - Dark dog with trim. He had beautiful breed type. Lovely head, which I preferred just a bit to #2’s. Nice topline, tending to be a tad steep in croup at times, nice feet and pastern, nicely angled both ends. He won the class on his side movement.

2nd - White with dark patches, he pushed #1 but did not have quite the side movement of stifle angulation. I preferred his topline. Both dogs were good down and back.

Dual Champion Stakes Dogs, 4 to 7 years - CRITIQUE by Caroline Coile, PhD

1st - Imposing predominantly dark dog with slight white trim. Absolutely smooth to the touch; at times his topline appeared flatter than it really was once I went over him. Nice mover both from the side and down and back. Beautiful head, ears, rear and feet.

2nd - I loved the racy lines of this gray dog. Loved his flowing lines and side movement. He wasn’t quite as solid as #1.

3rd - This is the dog that stole my heart on a personal level. I just adore his look—very beautiful. He did not have the side movement of the two before him and I placed him lower because of that.

4th - This impressive self-black had beautiful flowing lines, pretty feet and good feet. Strong head. Despite being easy on the go round he was not quite the mover that the others were.

1st - Feminine red with white. She still looks very young. Pretty expression, pretty topline, pretty rear. Front is set on a bit forward and straight, but she still needs to grow up and fill in. Flowing side movement.

Dual Champion Stakes Bitches, 4 to 7 years - CRITIQUE by Caroline Coile, PhD

1st - Elegant self-cream with beautiful head, smooth lines, sound mover, nice and easy going around. Would prefer a bit more topline and better feet.

2nd - Racy smaller gray with white, very athletic. Pretty on the go-round. I preferred the head on #1. Would prefer a better set-on front.

3rd - Racy black bitch, very pretty outline but a bit rougher hands on. I prefer a slightly stronger head. Her movement was not as flowing as the first two. Would prefer more upper arm return.

4th - Pretty white and parti, rougher in outline than the others, very pretty head. Would prefer more upper arm return.

Dual Champion Stakes Bitches, 7 to 10 years - CRITIQUE by Caroline Coile, PhD

1st - First in this very strong class to a grayish bitch. While not as initially dramatic as some of the others she kept moving her way up because of the smooth shoulders, better set front and easy flowing and sound movement. Very balanced.

2nd - Loved the outline on this dark with white trim, actually preferred her topline to #1. Strong front and rear, low set hocks, flowing going around, but not as sound as #1 on the up and back. Strong head. She pushed #1 closely.

3rd - Predominantly white with black ticking, she caught my eye from across the ring with her flowing curvaceous outline. Well set-on front. I would prefer less bend of pastern and more arch of toes.

4th - This mostly self gold is the style I love. Very pretty, sweet expression but not quite the mover as the others.

Dual Champion Stakes Bitches, 10 years and older - CRITIQUE by Caroline Coile, PhD

1st - This magnificent white with gray bitch is another with a beautiful expression and head. Impressive coat, very nice feet, dead sound down and back but not quite the side movement of some of the other class winners.

2nd - I love the racy outline of white-trimmed dark bitch, very nice topline. Preferred the head and feet of the other.

Dual Champion Stakes - OVERALL CRITIQUE by Caroline Coile, PhD

When I was asked to judge the DC sweeps, I thought: this will be simple! I have a good mental picture of my ideal Borzoi—athletic, flowing lines, beautiful face, slightly arched topline, small ears, good angulation, sound to and fro, and easy on the go-round with good reach and drive. This ideal is of course not seen every day, and jumps right out when it is. So when I approached the first class, saw the first dog, I thought, There’s my winner! Then on to the second dog and, uh oh: There’s my winner! And so on through the classes.

This was not easy. So many were so close to my ideal, as though exhibitors had read my mind and entered accordingly. Taking them around helped only a bit; so many had really good side movement. Relying on the old hack of down and back was equally unrewarding; where were all these dead sound dogs coming from? So in the end many decisions were made on the tiniest of matters. There were a few with bad feet and this ended up placing them farther back in line. Some moved high in rear and this also hurt their final placement. A surprising number had really dirty teeth and while this did not affect their placement it does affect the overall impression.

When it came to Best in Sweeps, I already knew it was not going to be easy. Moving them all again I was able to eliminate one, maybe two. Finally I was down to a dog and a bitch. I always feel bitches have an advantage in so many sighthounds, so I was inclined not to put her up. This coupled with the fact that she came back in with a cute but skilled kid showing her—an unfair advantage! But putting aside both of those things, in the end she won out based on her slightly more flowing side movement.

My notes tend to be lousy, basically consisting of “nice standing, nice side movement, nice down and back. Not another one—Argh!!” What I really want to say is: What a pleasure to see so many athletic Borzoi who could clearly do the job they were bred for.

When it came to best I chose my 7-10 year bitch, who I felt out-moved the 4-7 year dog.

Futurity Dogs, 9 months and under 12 - CRITIQUE by Sharon Johnson

1st - Sylvan Elance Travertine: A substantial youngster with powerful but light-footed sidegait. My first impression was he was a bit short on leg but his well-proportioned body was hiding under his plush coat.

2nd - Jubilee Qonnect The Dots: A very well-put-together pup with ground-covering sidegait. He could have taken first place on another day

3rd - Gladkii Veter Rhinestone Cowboy: Nicely proportioned, balanced and attractive pup.

4th - Chase N’ Dreams Ghost Riders On The Storm: Very nice outline and beautifully presented.

FUTURITY JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS by Sharon Johnson:

Thank you for the honor of judging the 2019 BCOA Futurity. I was very impressed with the overall quality of the entry. Temperaments were wonderful! No shyness or sharpness in any of the entrants. They ALL stood for exam like seasoned show dogs. Sidegait, for the most part, was quite good and more than acceptable. It ranged from powerful and ground covering to a few, a bit sadly, hackneyed and restricted.

Almost all of the entrants, in spite of exuberant puppy antics, were sound on the down and back, had good tail sets and scissors or level bites. Toplines were very good with short backs and comparatively long loins. Some looked flatter than I would have liked but once I got my hands on them, I found the toplines were masked by glorious puppy curls. Several were what I would call “wheel-backed” and rigid, which seemed to negatively affect the function and movement of the dog.
