General Specials CRITIQUE:

Please accept the following critique from this one breeder/judge's eye as findings of strengths and suggestions for improvement for the breed per the BCOA/AKC Standard.

Best of Breed
Eight-year-old veteran silver brindle bitch GChS Sylvan Silver Springbok was simply breathtaking. She didn't look or move like a veteran but rather as a mature bitch in her prime with so many breed virtues. Thus she won Best Owner-Handled and Best Veteran.

Best of Opposite Sex
Ch. Elance Summerlane Tigerwing - a tall, dark and handsome self brindle stallion of a dog has the elegance, power, movement, outline and breed details I love. Boy did he have an elegant presence and moved like a dream. I later learned he is a nephew of the BOB bitch and uncle to the WB/BOW!

Winners Bitch/BOW
Elance Moonshimmer, a self silver or chinchillacolored bitch. She was a gorgeous package also, with everything I love: balance, substance, elegance, exquisite expression, head and movement. She was also a niece to the BOS dog.

Winners Dog/Best Bred By Exhibitor
Valeska Investiture of Wonder is a lovely tri-colored dog. He was a balanced athlete also with correct movement, gorgeous head and athleticism needed for an elegant hunter.

Select Dog
GCh. Justart's Riot Act is a lovely, mostly white and some cream dog also with great style, presence, balance, structure and elegance. He could have easily won BOB or BOS on another day. I loved his movement in all directions.

Select Bitch
GCh. Zooropa Adrienne She Moves Eyes Follow. Well, her name says it all. She moved and my eyes followed! A lovely cream and white bitch with breathtaking sidegait and lovely breed type.

The ten Awards of Merit were a pack of all lovely Borzoi worthy of their heritage.

1st - Jubilee Sambuca Seven - Red and white black masked male with beautiful outline substance, balance, beautiful coming, going and sidegait.

2nd - Val-Thor Golightly Dirty Dancing - White male with lovely breed type. Heavy on ears, could use more topline. Pretty head and expression, nice angulation front and rear, balanced, nice sidegait.

3rd - Valeska A Thousand Kisses Deep - This red black-masked Irish-marked puppy dog has a gorgeous head, tiny high-set ears, gorgeous expression; could use more angulation for upper arm return but has pretty sidegait

4th - Steppes Aashtoria Moonlite Ride - Awkward stage but has nice substance, bone, head ok, pretty feet. Loose in pasterns and a bit rigid in croup

2nd - Paragon Zabava All Shook Up at Ostrov - Good compact package, nice outline, curvy, balanced with good and front and rear, good pasterns, topline, nice high-set ears, pretty head, dark eyes

3rd - Kyrov's Sword Dance - Tri-colored dog. Best head of the class; my kind of head, beautiful ears, outline, gorgeous angulation, topline, outline standing, front narrow in chest and crossing movement in front, rear much better and sidegait pleasing.

4th - Taugo's Raynbo Dancer at Justart - Red and white beautifully compact, balanced proportion, head, ears, expression, topline flat. Easy movement with good bone

4th - Val-Thor Golightly Dirty Dancing/Val-Thor Golightly Cha Cha Slide - Adorable and oh so happy white brother and sister puppies. He was a little long in body and he could use more topline; bitch carried tail high. Otherwise pretty heads and expression. Both nicely angled front and rear; he was very happy and wobbly each time he moved, throwing his sister off. Both had pretty sidegait.

CONFORMATION JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS:

First of all, what an honor to have been selected by the members of the Borzoi Club of America to judge the 2018 National Specialty in beautiful Richland, Washington! I would like to thank the membership for entrusting me with this rare privilege. The show committee did a fabulous job putting on a wonderful show as did all the other committees and our incomparable ring steward, Karen Mays. What treasures we in BCOA have in Barbara O'Neill, Karen Mays, Ron Williams, Carol Enz and all the others that help us have an elegant national show every year.

The first thing I notice when the Borzoi enter the ring is the outline. The Borzoi outline represents the sum of the parts you are about to examine; the overall impression should be that of an elegant aristocrat that is both fast and powerful no matter the color or markings. I am looking for a distinct flowing outline that begins with the Roman finish of the nose cartilage, up the long lean almost parallel head planes with barely any perceptible stop, continues through the small high-set ears that are gently folded back close to the head, down the long slightly-arched well-set-on neck that blends gently into the withers. Just past the withers I want to see a slight beginning of a rise that reaches its peak over the long well-muscled loins and gently falls away over a slightly angled croup and down through the long low-set tail that reaches past the broad, relatively short, perpendicular hock.

From under the nose I want to see a depth of underjaw and neck with tight skin that broadens down into the shoulders. The shoulder placement on the ribcage, layback and upper arm return to elbow that is aligned under the withers can usually be seen unless obscured by a heavy coat. I like to look down the front leg and see that is it not placed in front of the dog but under him. I want to look even further and see a slight bend in the pasterns, hare-shaped foot with long toes and well-arched knuckles. The outline of the deep chest almost reaching the elbows rises gently into the tuck-up of the loins and then descends down the first thigh and curves nicely at the stifle into the second thigh, down and back toward the short hock and back to the foot. This overall outline is a thing of immense beauty to me and deviations from this outline will require a closer look on examination.

Overall, I was impressed with the quality of the entry. Some classes were much stronger than others. The bitches were just lovely and I usually had several really nice ones to choose from and in some classes, too many nice ones to choose from! I have to say that the quality of the dogs was equal to that of the bitches, which is not usually the case.

There were a few entries that upon first go around and looking at them standing, I felt would be my class winners as I just loved their breed type, balance and outline but the movement on the down and back was way too sloppy or incorrect. If their outline is correct and balanced and they possess breed details such as head, expression, ears and outline which are outstanding I can forgive slightly imperfect movement or a less than perfect mouth and dentition. Most of the entries had nice efficient ground-covering sidegait. When weighing minor faults, one must remember the purpose each part has on the function. The dog must be able to reach the game before it has to hold it. Most of the topline faults were from having little or no rise or having too flat a croup. The most common movement and structure issues I found were too narrow in chest/front and or rear/hips, thus moving narrow on the down and back caused by a lack of chest width or cow-hocked rears. As I reflect back on all the Borzoi I have seen on the coursing field, the tall, weedy or narrow will lack agility and turning ability.

1st - Katushka's Star Lord - Impressive male. He caught my eye the moment I saw him and he did not disappoint when moving. Masculine male with good bone, length of leg, long well-set-on neck that flowed into correct shoulder placement with rise above his loin, which transitioned into a well-angled rear with good length of second thigh. This stallion-like male was in fabulous condition and had a great rapport with his handler. His down and back was clean and sound. On the side he moved properly from the shoulder and covered a lot of ground with each step as a Borzoi should. A real stand-out. He went on to be awarded Best of Opposite Sex in Sweepstakes.

I slightly preferred his overall outline a bit more than his brother but on this day, #1's slightly better movement won the class.

Most competitive class of the day. The depth of quality in this class was breathtaking. On a different day some of the awards could have been different.

1st - Jubilee Stone Creek Anisetta - I only hope my words can do her justice. A real standout who caught my eye immediately. Lovely balanced outline with an elegant headpiece and dark eyes, black pigment with a lovely expression. Nice neck placement that flowed into correct shoulder placement with nice long upper arm. Proper rise over the loin transitioning into well-angled rear with good length of second thigh. Very long tail carried correctly which completed the picture when moving. Light on her feet, sound on the down and back and effortless ground-covering sidegait. Elegant, feminine and typey girl who possesses many of the finer qualities that define a Borzoi. Wonderful, showy girl with a tail that seldom stopped wagging and never let her handler down in the final competition. It was my pleasure to award her Best in Puppy Sweepstakes!

2nd - Steppes Milky Way - Although a different style than the winner, she was a standout as well. Great bone, beautiful outline and excellent overall balance. Light and easy mover from the side and on the down and back.

3rd - Elance Ruffle Feathers - Good bone, sound on the go around and on the down and back

4th - Elance Ruffles and Truffles - littermate to 3rd place. Good bone and sound girl. Preferred her sister's head a bit more which was the difference in placements.

Lovely balanced outline with pretty head, dark eye, long and well set-on neck with proper shoulder placement. Long upper arm, great depth of chest and proper rise of topline over the loin. Nice well-angled rear with good length of second thigh. Well-boned girl but maintained her femininity. She was in fabulous muscle tone and moved from the shoulder with ground-covering strides. Her down and back was sound and true. Her tail was long and carried low. She never put a foot down wrong and showed her heart out for us all. Excellent representative of the breed.

Best of Opposite Sex in Veteran Sweepstakes - GCH Ostrov Zabava Casanova (9-10 year) - An impressive and masculine male with good bone, substance, great length of leg and maintained the majestic stallion-like presence of a Borzoi male. Elegant head, dark eye, gorgeous expression, with long well-set neck flowing into excellent front assembly with great depth of chest. Proper rise over the loin, proper rear angulation and long tail. He was in excellent condition and carried a lovely coat. He was sound coming and going. He possessed ground-covering sidegait and moved from the shoulder. Lovely outline and pushed Best in Sweeps winner hard for the top award.

SWEEPSTAKES JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS:

It was an honor to be selected by my peers to judge the puppy and veteran sweepstakes at the 2018 borzoi club of america national specialty held in richland, washington. Overall, the entry was impressive—promising youngsters and incredible veterans showing the youngsters how it was done!

The Borzoi combines beauty and athleticism in the perfect package. Diversity is a great strength of our breed. Different styles/types are allowable under the standard and many classes contained a range to choose from.

Whether breeding or judging, one of my highest priorities is a well-constructed front and rear assembly. A Borzoi must move from the shoulder and cover ground with each stride. The front movement should not be mincy or extreme and the rear must display equal drive to balance the stride. Of course, they must also possess the finer points of the breed that completes the package of the elegant and regal Borzoi. I felt my winners represented my interpretation of the standard well.

3rd - Val-Thor Golightly Dirty Dancing. A big, masculine, very handsome young man that has wonderful bone and substance.

1st - Bella Luna Little Miss Sunshine. A simply gorgeous tri bitch with a classic head, and type which screamed "Borzoi". The more she moved the better she got. One small detail that I noticed immediately was that she had the correct "hare foot" that one rarely sees these days. She went on to become my Best Senior Bitch.

2nd - Sylvan Amazing Pixie. An incredibly lovely sable bitch that was strongly in contention with my first place winner. Smooth mover, pretty head and fabulous shoulders.

FUTURITY JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS:

Overall I observed good breed type which, of course, can encompass many different styles. Soundness was seen throughput except for a few dogs that looked like they needed more exercise. Very few missing teeth and bites were good. A few very weak pasterns. Some top lines were high, but most dropped when the dogs started to gait. Heads were generally exceptionally correct with lovely almond cut eyes. There were too many very high and short toed cat feet. Most entries had good bone and substance. I want this substance while still maintaining elegance and breed type—congratulations to the breeders for achieving this which can be difficult to do. Side gait was quite strong and I certainly rewarded the exceptional movers. Thank you to the breeders for choosing me as their Futurity Judge this year. It was a particular honor to be chosen by one's peers. To say I had a memorable experience is an understatement. Good luck to you all in your breedings now and in the future!
