My eventual Best of Breed winner was Ch Taugo's Ulric. This dog was a great specimen of our breed. He was masculine yet elegant, commanding and regal with a beautiful head, body and temperament. A dog who could not only do his job, but look beautiful while he accomplished his task. Elegant standing and moving and presented in wonderful condition. My Best of Opposite GCH Majenkir Bookstor Vintage Glamour was a substantial bitch with good reach and drive, with a lovely outline. At the end she asked for the win on the final go around. Select Bitch was Ch Aashtoria Svora Ice Queen, also best owner-handler who had a beautiful head and profile and moved well in good condition. Select Dog, no picture taken, no critique given.

The 12 to 18 class can be a difficult age for males but my four placements came from strong competition. The class winner, Aashtoria's Top Secret, showed well with a very good head and lovely profile, while 2nd won on substance and outline and 3rd was well balanced. 4th had a good front but the tail was an issue.

The bred by male class is always my favorite and I look forward to watching this class at the specialties. You expect breeders to showcase their best and many times from this class come the next great dogs. My eventual winner had one of the best front assemblies on the day. He had lots of correct breed elements and this breeder has paid attention to all of the finer details. Kyrov's Time Traveller won this class in very tough competition but he also was on the verge of being almost too extreme. Any more angulation and it would have been too much. The second placement was well balanced with good spring of rib and black pigmentation. 3rd had a dark eye and lovely profile both moving and standing. 4th was a competitive dog out of coat but I see a great future when this dog matures.

From the open class came my eventual winners and reserve. Riju Enjoy the Ride was a lovely tri dog with a long lean head and correct topline. He was an efficient and balanced mover with an easy gait, my eventual winners dog. Raynbo's Triple Crown at Maskova went Reserve; pushing hard the first in this class he was substantial and had good shoulders but his zealous character didn't always help him on the move. 3rd also showed a lovely outline and good substance and 4th was a balanced dog with very good bend of stifle.

The 6 to 9 bitch class was small but my first place and eventual best puppy was Aria's Ive Got Rhythm, a very well-balanced pretty bitch that showed well beyond her age. She was also competitive in the winners class. 2nd and third were littermates with nice profiles and substance. Fourth had good bend of stifle and a pleasing head.

The winner of the 9 to 12, Svora's Secret Heiress, was a substantial bitch with a good head and very sound. Unfortunately on the move, at speed, she carried her tail too high and the owner moved her too slow to go any farther in winners. Second in the class was a big bitch with good sidegait. 3rd and fourth had a very dark eye and good neck sets, preferring one over the other on sidegait.

Open was a competitive class with 3 of the placements being closely related. First and eventual winners bitch Majenkir Firelily had a very good topline and moved well on the side with well bent stifles. She was very feminine and when she was collected and settled she moved exceptionally well with a beautiful silhouette moving and standing. This bitch just kept getting better. 2nd was similar to first with nice veining and gave first a real run for her money. 3rd was substantial with good depth of chest and 4th having good shoulders, a little flat on the topline but very good spring of rib.

This dog was not only competitive in this class but also right down to the final cut and breed. 2nd was a very substantial dog with both breadth and depth of chest. 3rd was balanced and sound with 4th having a lovely head and profile.

The 7 to 10 veteran bitch class made me work and after going over all the previous Borzoi this was the class I will remember for a long time. This class was won by GCH Sylvan Vitrina Finian's Rainbow who showed her heart out. She was moved at a very appropriate speed where on this day she was balanced in movement front and rear with good reach and drive. In profile she had a very good continuous flow from nose to tail. Also an AOM. Second in this tough class was a bitch with beautiful profile, neck and reach and drive. 3rd was balanced in structure and profile and 4th was a curvy bitch with a dark eye and balanced on the move.

She was also an eventual AOM, quite an accomplishment for a veteran of this age. 2nd place was a very good bitch in good condition but her head was not as elegant as my first. 3rd tried very hard for her owner and had good sidegait.

CONFORMATION JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS:

Getting to Albuquerque, New Mexico is no easy task. The airlines changed my flight several times ending in a journey through Midland/Bay City, Detroit, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis, 6 airports in all and a 12-hour day each way. This was nothing compared to the distances people drove to show at the National and I admire the dedication from the exhibitors that travelled from all four corners of the United States and Canada. The success of this specialty is a direct result of the committee's efforts and promotion. Well run by the members and the accommodative hotel.

The overall quality of the entry was very good and the Borzoi of today are in the hands of some very dedicated and passionate breeders. In my 30 years in Borzoi the ebb and flow of good dogs seems to be back on the upswing. One observation is that at most shows the quality is often not anywhere near the caliber of our National. Where are these dogs the rest of the year?

In evaluating the entry I was pleased with silhouette, sidegait, breadth and depth of chest and shoulders. There were some stunning heads and excellent coats. Bone and feet were generally good. On the negative too many had poor tail carriage which can destroy an overall lovely specimen. Also there were more than a few that were way too narrow and lacked the capacity for good lung and heart. Even though the standard calls for full dentition it is a shame that missing teeth and bites have not seen any improvement. On average no matter where I judge the frequency and number of missing teeth is universal. However, size of teeth are getting smaller and we need good strong large teeth set in a well-developed under jaw (a "U" not "V" shape). One of the faults in profile was Borzoi that had necks set at too upright an angle with poor placement into the shoulders and croups that were too steep. We all need to be cognizant of that smooth continuous curve from nose to tail. Soundness on the down and back has not improved over the years but we can hope. One personal criticism was that too many dogs changed shape on the move. Standing they may have looked fine but moving their shape was entirely something else. I want to see a Borzoi as beautiful on the move as they are on the stack.

It was a fantastic three days of judging Borzoi in Albuquerque at the 2014 National. Thank you to the members for this opportunity and thank you to the committee for another specialty well done!

This young man went on to Best In Puppy Sweepstakes. He just got better and better and held himself together all the way through.

2) Obi Wan Kenobi Z'Bilmy: Handsome puppy with lovely head, excellent veining, wonderful dark eyes, nice bone and substance and tail carriage, well angled, best front and reach but less sound right now. Biggest boy in the class.

3) Kalabria Mielikki Riverrun Beyond The Darkness: A very cute package, this little man looks to be the youngest in the class. He has a lovely topline, super ears, nice dark eyes with black haws in a lovely head. Very nice feet and a nice long tail. He didn't move quite as freely as the older boys today but a very nice puppy.

1) Gladkii Veter Ravens Wood: This youngster has a pleasing outline but a little more leg would be welcome at this stage. He has a nice neck and beautiful shoulder with good upper arm length and return. His head is pleasant, with nice dark eyes – an especially nice point in a self black dog. He has a long second thigh to match his upper arm and lovely low hocks. Feet are nicely knuckled and he is a nice moving dog.

2) Gladkii Veter Papi: This puppy is of similar style/proportions as #1, though not as well angulated. He has a larger ear, a nice shoulder and topline/croup and a good low broad hock. A nice mover.

3) Akanni's Prince Madoc Howff Carbonel: This strong athletic boy has good leg and nice proportions and shape. He has a slightly larger ear, a dark eye in an elegant head, balanced pleasing angles, movement not quite as smooth but pleasant.

4) Resolute's Rafe Baudeen Jedawn: A tall, leggy pup with lots of strong body. He possesses a compact body, with a nice topline. Front and rear angles pleasant, not overdone, balanced. He has a straighter pastern. His hocks are low, feet are nicely knuckled. A larger ear and the head profile could be more elegant.

1. Wildwood Smoke Of A Distant Fire: A longer bodied boy with a pretty head and nice ears. He could benefit from more leg but he has lots of bone and body. He has nice shoulders but I would like to see more upper arm length – that would be true for every puppy in this class. He has a broad hock and well-knuckled feet. A nice moving dog. There is a notable curl in his tail but he held it nice and low.

2. Golightly Daedalus Lukas Rozavetrov: A sturdy boy that gives the impression of a strong compact package. He has nice leg under him and I liked his proportions. He possesses a nice topline and croup and a moderate but pleasing rear. He has nice shoulders. His upper arm lacks length but is well returned. His head is somewhat heavy but not unpleasant, with a rosed ear. Well-knuckled feet. He was extremely proud of his tail.

3. Avalyn's Forgotten Realm: This is a nice leggy boy with very nice neck and shoulders and good proportions. His head profile has a more domed skull than ideal but the backskull was pleasingly narrow. He possesses large ears. He has good forechest but less body than one would want. He too has a short upper arm and it would be nice if it had more return. His hock is somewhat high as well. He did improve and use himself better as the class went on.

Puppy Sweepstakes Dogs, 15 months and under 18 - CRITIQUE by Cherie Hunchak

1) Konza-Plum Creek Alfa Romeo At Aruzia: A really nice stallion of a dog, slightly heavier type but well put together. Good mover, solid body with good shoulders. His upper arm could be longer/more returned but he has a strong outline. His ears could be smaller. He carried his tail well in this class; he was a hot contender for Best in Sweeps but his tail and teenage boy brain got the best of him.

2) Aashtoria's Top Secret: Just a delightful dog, lovely front with great shoulders and wonderful upper arm length and return, lovely head and expression with small ears, lovely movement, wonderful topline, low tail carriage. He is within standard but a little more size would be appropriate – it would add that masculine "oomph."

3) Aashtoria's My Secret Agenda: A beautiful young male of size and substance, with great leg under him, nice pasterns and thick feet. He is a lovely mover, with a pretty headpiece that is still masculine. He has a lovely neck and shoulder but lacks length of upper arm. He exhibits a nice topline, broad hocks and great tail carriage.

4) Avalon Dark Knight Willowind Del Sol: A very athletic dog, moderate behind but strong, with great length of leg. He possesses an exquisite headpiece with a beautiful ears, very nice neck and shoulders and is set under himself well. Nice topline, nice foot knuckling; an adequate mover but one that could get the job done without any problems.

1) Oleandra Z'Bilmy: Lovely head piece – wonderful veining, gorgeous dark eyes, small ears. Great front that she uses very well – lovely shoulders, long upper arm that reaches freely. Nice topline under that huge puppy coat. A little modest in second thigh but moves very fluidly.

2) Aria's I've Got Rhythm: A lovely baby with a melting face. She has wonderful forechest, well returned upper arm though hers was not as lengthy as the first puppy. Nice bend of pastern. The use of her front assembly was not opening quite as freely today but lovely topline, lovely rear, curvy and pleasing.

1) Gladkii Veter Tierruca: A very pleasing bitch. Good size, wonderful bone, nice outline with good length of neck, strong quarters, nice easy movement, good substance, nice feet, low tail carriage, very nice.

2) Gladkii Veter Grey Fox: This little girl was a little less stylish but very functional. She is more moderate in the rear but a very pleasing long upper arm, nice shoulder, good solid girl that is going to do the job.

3) Resolute's Brett Main Jedawn: A very pretty little package, this bitch is well balanced front and rear, nice leg, with compact construction. Her tail is higher than ideal.

4) Resolute's Willa Parker Jedawn: This bitch was slightly bigger than the #3 placement, with good leg and a compact body. She needed more length to her upper arm. A very pretty expression. A moderate bitch with a nice topline under that puppy coat.

1) Wildwood Take Off The Gloves: A good functional bitch. She possesses a long, pretty head, nice ears, one of those rare good fronts, a nice bend of pastern and good leg. She has a strong

body and good topline. She has slightly more rear than she needs but she uses herself well.

2. Golightly Damask Rosa Vetrov: This bitch has great leg under her and strong loin muscling. Her head could be slightly more feminine but she possesses small, well-set ears. I would like to see more length to her neck and her upper arm and to her body as well Nice depth of chest, nice pasterns, a nice low hock, well-knuckled feet. Very curvy, with nice topline, nice pastern. A pleasing way of moving but tail carried higher than it should be this day.

3. Wildwood Tiny Dancer: Nice strong bitch with good neck/shoulder. She has a straight upper arm and while her topline falls away sooner than I like to see, giving her a longer croup, it is still strong and functional. A slightly longer/lower shape, well knuckled feet with nice pasterns. Tail carried higher. Movement not quite as free as the other entries.

1. Del Sol Dark Canyon Avalon V. Willowind: Lovely head and eye, with high tiny ears. She is not overdone in any way, balanced both ends, great haunch muscling, could use a little more leg and depth of body. Nice tail carriage, beautiful mover on the side – easy, fluid, "go all day." A great little athlete. This bitch went on to Best Opposite Sex in Puppy Sweepstakes.

2. Aashtoria's My Dirty Little Secret: Drop dead pretty girl, with beautiful head and expression, feminine, lovely outline but rather tense today so didn't move out quite as well as I suspect she can. Nice shoulder, upper arm could use more length; high set ears, nice pasterns, beautiful broad hock. Low tail carriage. Once she settles, she will indeed have her day.

3. Avalon WW Darkskaya Dare: A strong bitch with good shoulder, good leg and bone. Well knuckled feet, nice pasterns. Balanced angles, stands under herself well, very nice topline/croup. Rangier, good way of going along.

4. Avalon WW Dazzle In The Dark: A curvy bitch with a lovely elegant head, good leg, shorter coupled than number three. Well knuckled feet, nice pasterns, stands under herself well. I would like a broader hock.. Her topline falls away sooner than I prefer to see. A beautiful bitch but she didn't move out quite as well as number three today.

SWEEPSTAKES JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS:

Thank you for the privilege of reviewing your delightful puppies. There was pride and love and boundless hopes and dreams apparent in the ring as we spent time together. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Your puppies over all showed great promise. I was particularly impressed when puppy after puppy exhibited wonderful body – rib spring and muscling and oomph! There were many beautiful, melting expressions as well and lots of well-knuckled feet. To be sure, we had some issues – some bites and missing teeth, stubby upper arms and tails that wanted to be sure they were noticed – but there were also nice long legs, dark eyes and lovely croups. I chose not to fault judge on flaws but rather to emphasize and reward qualities the breed could use. There was more than one class that was exceptionally strong, where a fourth place was no shame but rather only a reflection of a great puppy in a group that had deep quality.

Best wishes to each of you as you grow out these darling babies and wait with bated breath to see how the dreams unfold. I will be watching with great interest as your youngsters mature and go on to the great things I imagine they will. Thank you again!

Veteran Sweepstakes

This traditionally is one of the most difficult group of entries to adjudicate and this day was no exception. There is so much emotion for our seniors and the bittersweet flavor of maturity mixed with aging. When the first classes entered the ring, I looked over the line up presented and thought to myself, "Are you kidding me?" In front of me were some of the top animals of their generation, at this stage still in their prime. It truly was a joy – and a challenge – to see them all in one place. The quality overall was very deep and it was agonizing to be able to only award first place. Thank you for sharing your beloved veterans with us all.

My Best in Veteran Sweepstakes was Grand Champion Aruzia Priority One, JC, CGC. This is a lovely dog of impeccable quality in his prime. His head is pleasing, though of a heavier style, with a sweet, intelligent expression. His ears are nicely rosed. He has a lovely strong neck set into wonderful shoulders and an excellent front. I love his wonderful bone, body and substance and how his length of body and length of leg are so in balance. He has a lovely topline and croup and a beautiful rear with a lovely low broad hock. He has excellent sound movement, easy and athletic, carrying his tail low. He has lovely coat texture, not too much nor too little. A very fine animal.

My Best of Opposite Sex in Veteran Sweepstakes was Champion Aashtoria-Irishbrook La Rochelle, JC. This bitch has gotten only better as she has matured and is truly in her prime. A different style than the Best In Sweepstakes winner, she is more refined and elegant but equally as lovely. She is very feminine, possessing a long elegant head with high set pretty ears. She has a nice neck, set into good shoulders and is set under herself. Bladed bone, nice body. A little longer in body but acceptable, with lovely mature coat. Nicely angulated with a broad hock. She boasts a nice outline and croup, a good tail set and carriage and she floated around the ring.

While this was not my intent, these two animals complimented each other well and ironically, have actually been paired to produce a nice litter for their owners.
