General Specials CRITIQUE by Mr. Bo Bengtson:

Managing the big specials class so the cuts would be clear to ringside, so as many dogs as possible would be visible on the video (which as we speak I have still not seen), and so I wouldn't be left with too few dogs in the ring in the end (BOB, BOW, BOW, two Selects and 10 Awards of Merit) was not easy, and would have been difficult even in a ring twice as big. I was very pleased with my final cut, however, and especially happy that although the bitches all-over were a bit better than the dogs, six of the 10 AOMs went to males.

In the end I didn't have any doubt that the 3-year-old Ch. Sylvan Silver Springbok (daughter of the 2nd in Veteran Bitch) was the one that most closely met the breed standard's requirements of "unmistakable elegance, with flowing lines, graceful in motion or repose." I thought she was just lovely and couldn't seriously fault her in any area. She had just turned three the previous month; I look forward to seeing her in full maturity over the next couple of years.

The main competition came from the BOS dog, GCh. Avalyn's Magnum Force, to whom I have awarded a couple of Breeds on previous occasions and who was the male special that best combined great elegance with masculinity without coarseness, and from the lovely GCh. Majenkir Bookstor Vintage Glamour, who was Select Bitch just ahead of her beautiful dam, the winning veteran. I think it's a mistake to specify what little things one may want to change in an outstanding dog, so let me just say that I was tremendously impressed by all the finalists. That of course goes also for the Select Dog, GCh. Jubilee Tad Bit O'Brindle Mist, shown by a talented Junior Handler, and all the Awards of Merit, in no particular order: Dual Ch. Téine Rainbow Glacier, GCh. Gladkii Veter Sapphire, Ch. Majenkir Luna Flyte, GCh. Raynbo's Run For The Roses, GCh. Aashtoria Wild Hunt 4 Your I's Only, RN, Ch. Auroral's Artemis, Ch. Majenkir Front and Center, Ch. Zharkov Téine Briar, and the two veterans.

Best Puppy went to Sylvan Rafaella, absolutely one of the day's best movers, regardless of age. She's still quite immature but is definitely another one I'd like to see again in a couple of years.

(May a judge make a comment about two other judges? The Neales, who own and bred both BOB and Best Puppy, and whose breeding is also behind WD and BOW, are of course familiar to me as judges: we have been on the same panels a couple of times and chatted casually. It's much nicer when you can find, as someone said, "a little lady you've never seen before" showing your ultimate winner, and that actually happens to me a lot. However, we're judging dogs, not people, and the fact remains that I liked two of the Neales' dogs very much. By the way, I have only shown Whippets under the Neales a couple of times and didn't win a thing on those occasions!)

Among some very impressive class dogs I was very taken with the mostly black Vitrina Constellation, extremely well balanced and correct all the way through. I couldn't care less about color; I'm sure some of the applause was for "a black winning," but this one would be good in any color. He kept improving and went from a well-deserved WD on to BOW two days later. RWD was the younger Jantar Déjà Vu at Majenkir, drop-dead gorgeous and one I'd like to see again when he's mature.

Finding the winners among the bitches was more difficult than in the dog classes, as quality was higher and there was more to choose from. Finally I chose Jantar Somewhere Ntym at Avalyn (a litter sister to RWD) as WB, as in spite of her youth she had it all together on the day; so smooth and well constructed. The next day she looked a little tired in BOB, and who can blame her? I was told she finished with this win in only a handful of shows before 18 months of age. RWB went to the Open Bitch, Nickolai Khurik Mystral Wind at Highgarden, not as flashy as some but extremely correct and sound.

The veterans provided some highlights. I was very impressed by the 7-10 Years Dog class winner, Ch. Téine Unstable Force, SC, who got a well-deserved AOM later in the day. The equivalent class for bitches was large and very competitive, ending with a duel between the lovely 9-year-old GCh. Sylvan Vitrina Finian's Rainbow, SC and the younger GCh. Majenkir Bookstor Glamour Girl, who really lives up to her name. Both are gorgeous, rather different in type, and although Glamour Girl won, the older bitch could easily have held her own in the BOB competition as well. (I think I was told she's the aunt of the WD.)

The Stud Dog and Brood Bitch classes were awesome, with several teams I really wanted to honor. However, how could you resist the amazing threesome that was sired by Ch. Majenkir Front and Center? They consisted of RWD, WB and 1st in a very competitive BBE class, and, since they were littermates, the same of course goes for the Brood Bitch class winner Ch. Northwoods Jantar Timeless Love. It's no secret that I have always been an admirer of the Majenkir breeding program, and this trio, although the result of the cooperation between several talented breeders, is among the best.

CONFORMATION JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS:

I have always felt there are no other shows in the world that can compare to the best national specialties in the U.S. They are one of the few really positive developments we've seen in dogs in recent decades, as more and more people in most breeds realize the importance of having one big, wonderful shop window where the rest of the world can see their breed at its best. The national specialties vary a lot from one breed to the next, but the Borzoi Club of America puts on one of the best shows of its kind.

I've been lucky to judge a few national specialties for other breeds, and each one provided its own treasured memories, but the BCOA national this year was very special to me for many reasons. I appreciated the kindness shown to me by both officials (the gift basket was the best ever!) and exhibitors, with special thanks to my ring steward Karen Mays. Although the judging arena was too warm for both the dogs and for me, the ring was large and provided excellent footage. The decorations were impressive, and the whiff of cattle manure that wafted in through the open doors just added a little extra atmosphere, reminding us that Lancaster is not in Imperial Russia but in the heart of Pennsylvania Amish country…

I spent three fascinating days working my way through 88 class dogs on Thursday, 112 bitches on Friday, and a total of 146 entries (53 veterans, 93 specials) on Saturday. Class dogs as usual were mixed, class bitches both more numerous and generally of higher quality, while the veteran classes set the bar high for the specials that followed. The 48 male champions were an impressive sight when they filed into the ring, and the 45 bitches made my heart skip a few times. This is what national specialties are all about, and there were specials that didn't make the cut on this day that I would quite happily award BOB to at other shows.

My two main criticisms concern primarily mouths and fronts. Especially in males there were too many that bordered on undershot. This isn't a problem in any of the other Sighthound breeds, as far as I know, except possibly Irish Wolfhounds, and their standard doesn't specify what type of bite is acceptable, while yours does: even or scissors. I'm definitely not a tooth fanatic, and I won't penalize heavily for a couple of popped teeth, but it's worth keeping an eye on this.

Speaking of teeth, your standard says that "missing teeth should be penalized," but common sense must tell you it's not possible for a judge to count teeth unless you have an extra minute or so at your disposal for each dog. Even that won't work unless the dogs cooperate, which many of them are not trained to do. I have no idea how other judges deal with this in practice, but it's just not possible to count 3+1+4+2 x 2 above and 3+1+4+3 x 2 below on each dog in the time available. In any case I would rather have big, strong, gleaming white teeth, even if a premolar is missing, than a complete set of little weedy acorns. And while we're on teeth: far too many had obviously never had theirs cleaned. If you spend a lot of time conditioning and grooming your dog it doesn't make sense to neglect the teeth to such a degree as was frankly often the case.

Fronts in Borzoi have always been something of a problem. I'm not sure why, perhaps because it's difficult to achieve the correct, rather narrow front end without unduly straightening the upper arm. Certainly straight fronts are a problem in many Sighthounds, but usually not to the degree I saw here. The number of solid, fully functional, well-angulated front assemblies was not nearly as large as I could have wished.

On the positive side, temperament easily comes first. In this big entry not a single one acted really badly, and just a couple were less than happy to have me go over them. That's impressive, and I'm not sure how many other Sighthound breeds could equal this. Heads were generally beautifully shaped although I'd like to have seen more veining in some cases, ears with a few exceptions were small and fine, toplines VERY good with very few that were either too flat or too arched, and hindquarters excellent, with sufficient angulation and parallel, strong hocks. Bone was in most instances beautifully bladed. Type was all over the place, but that's OK as long as the dogs meet the AKC standard's requirements. The old Russian hunts, according to all reports, had dogs that varied in type quite a lot, so why wouldn't different kennels today have their own distinct type? The Borzoi is not a breed where the ideal is to produce dogs as identical as tin soldiers.

This was a large and competitive class. My class winner, Konza-Plum Creek Aston Martin caught my eye from the very start with his balance, sidegait, soundness and type. I was thrilled to have this dog in my very first class. He was the winner in the class as well as my Best in Puppy Sweepstakes. I loved his attitude and his overall appearance: angulation, neck, outline, drive, and lightness of the gait. He never set a foot wrong and was just like a pro, especially for such a young puppy. SWEEPSTAKES JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS by Irina Terra:

Judging sweepstakes at the National was a real honor and I want to thank everyone for trusting me to evaluate your beautiful puppies and veterans. All puppies and veterans were presented in good condition and had stellar temperaments. The overall quality of this large entry was very good. There were only a few missing teeth and perhaps only one or two bad bites. Tail set and carriage seemed to have improved compared to what I had seen at other Nationals. I wish I saw less light eyes. I believe we need to pay more attention to drive, which is very indicative of a dog's power in the rear, which in turn is the true engine of a sighthound. In general, I think we can hope for a promising future for our breed judging on the entry of the puppies presented to me.

Veterans:

As I have said during my speech at the National, I view judging veterans is a huge honor but also somewhat of a punishment. It simply feels wrong to reward one beautiful veteran over another. I am so grateful to everyone for bringing me their treasured oldsters and I only wish they could have all been "Best".
