General Specials CRITIQUE by Patti Neale:

There was much depth of quality in Specials competition and nearly half made the first cut. The fourteen standing after the deeper cut included five dogs and nine bitches, in addition to Winners Dog and Bitch. Though they varied in style, each met the "whole dog" requirements to a high degree, had most of the finer details of type and moved freely. It was a pleasure to have Awards of Merit to recognize ten excellent Borzoi beyond the top four winners.

In the end, GCh. Aashtoria Wildhunt Hidden Agenda bested the field with a beautiful head, full mouth, superior front and shoulder, excellent angulation and carriage, and effortless movement in all directions. I looked past the distraction of untypical grooming that did no visual favors to some of his best points. The Winners Dog, and Select Dog, GCh. Aruzia Priority One JC were very worthy challengers for the top spot.

On the distaff side, GCh. Golightly Beau Soleil Lagniappe JC typified the classic feminine Borzoi bitch, with light easy gait, pretty head and lovely outline. The Select bitch, seven year old Ch. Kachina-Valeska Wind Dancer SC was more substantial, and in a heavily sabled plush red coat that made her excellent structure less apparent from a distance. Despite the difference in style, each made a package that was a delight to a breeder's eye.

DOGS, 6 months and under 9 - CRITIQUE by Patti Neale

Tosch Jubilee Oberon, a sound, nicely proportioned red brindle puppy led the class of four boys, the rest of which were at an ungainly stage of development.

DOGS, 9 months and under 12 - CRITIQUE by Patti Neale

The dozen puppies in this class were surprisingly nice as the age is usually an awkward one for the fast growing boys. Kenai's Nostalgia V Bucksilver, a striking tricolor with a good body, great details, and smooth easy gait edged out the very sound Vitrina Ticonderoga on outline and head.

The name of the class belied the quality, maturity, and presentation of the winner, Belisarius JP M-P Fate. This gold spotted boy had a correct outline, low hocks, and a fit muscular body.

DOGS, Bred by Exhibitor - CRITIQUE by Patti Neale

The Bred By Exhibitor class of nine was surprisingly varied in shape and quality. Elance Beyond The Blue, a striking stallion hound, instantly excited my breeder's eye with wonderful silhouette, neck and angles, great carriage and extension, and overall soundness and condition. I expected that he would be the one to beat in Winners class. His runner-up, Morozova's Smoky Mountain Blues was an excellent quality brindle spotted male, sound, nicely boned and bodied, and almost disguised in a glorious heavy coat.

The standout dog in this class, gold spotted Taugo's Ulric, was a stunning, mature male in full coat who commanded immediate attention both standing, and on the go-round. Deep body, high ear set, strong topline, beautiful balance and sound movement gave him the highest marks in this class, and then a very slight edge over the outstanding Bred-By dog in Winners. A worthy second was the black and tan Elance Black Swan, a curvy, solid free-moving dog with excellent type marred only by an over-filled head.

Another class of fifteen, mostly unrelated bitches, was more challenging in the variety of shapes. The correct outline of the winner, red brindle spotted Vitrina Saratoga, was easy to see, as she was dressed in her underwear. She was sound, long-striding, bodied up with lots of angles, needing only a bit more leg. She made the final cut in Winners went on to Best Puppy.

This strong group of mostly mature bitches produced the eventual Winners Bitch in Taugo Ur Mystical Rhayne. She drew the eye with lovely head and ears, long neck, well set under front, excellent length of leg, outstanding condition and light free movement in all directions. A competitive second was sabled fawn spotted Majenkir Luna Flyte, another legged-up shapely girl with a fine package of breeder qualities.

CONFORMATION JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS by Patti Neale:

It was a high honor to be given the opportunity to judge the National Specialty for the second time. The riverside setting in Richland made a perfect backdrop to showcase the beauty of our hounds.

My task as the judge was to see past the surface and find those individuals with the greatest number of good qualities as defined by the Standard. Whole dog is always the first consideration. The critical qualities that make up the essence of a sighthound, and more specifically, our Borzoi as defined by the standard, are most apparent when the Borzoi is moving around the ring in profile on a loose lead. Running gear, topline, tail, carriage, extension, balance and grace are given high priorities since they are defining elements of type and construction.

The physical examination takes inventory of the small details of the dog as well as the important qualities of substance, dentition, ribspring and muscular condition, less discernible to the eye.

Borzoi that were strong in the "whole dog" department were the dogs that made the first cut. Individuals that survived a second cut or made the ribbons, possessed more of the fine details. Ranking within the final four in each class usually returned to carriage, extension, and grace. There was much in the way of genuine breeding stock that rose above just "show quality."

Heads, toplines, substance and eyes were good throughout most of the entry, as were rears and feet. Fronts were not as consistently good, and were a deciding factor in a number of the close contests. Most of the class males had full dentition, as did the younger bitches. Older bitches and specials had a greater incidence of missing premolars. Tail carriage overall was the best I've seen in years. I was pleased to find hard condition on many of the entrants of all ages. Temperaments were excellent.

While a full coat is a Borzoi's crowning glory, and many dogs were fully dressed, at no point was it a deciding factor. The biggest area of compromise in judging was on outline. Long bodies, shorter legs, forward-set shoulders, lack of angles on both ends not only are structural faults, but impact breed type as defined by the Standard.

The Veteran entry of 13, most in fine shape, was a testament to the efforts of breeders and care of owners. Many of the veterans would have been contenders in Best of Breed competition, and indeed two of them remained so.

1. Tosch Jubilee Oberon - A self red-brindle, with beautiful dark eyes. He had proper proportions, carried his tail down, and moved with good reach and drive. Also had a good down and back, with no crossing and no pastern flipping. Strongest rear in this class. .

2. Horse and Hound Bellagio - White and gold spotted, with excellent shoulder layback and a long upper arm set back properly. Attractive head and expression.

3. Horse and Hound Tuscany Radost - White and gold spotted , with a beautiful head. Best forechest in this class.

4. Jubilee Tosch Ganymede - White with red brindle spots, this promising puppy had complete dark pigment, and efficient movement.

Puppy Sweepstakes Dogs, 9 months and under 12 - CRITIQUE by KC Artley

1. Vitrina Ticonderoga (Best Opposite Sex) - a self red-gold, he had the right amount of bone for his height. Had a long lean head, with excellent black pigment, and expression. He was well angulated, and combined with a proper topline, he had great reach and drive that was smooth and effortless. Also had sufficient rib spring, a good forechest and good depth of chest.

2. Katushka's Gauguin - a tall tan-brindle, he had excellent length of neck and carried his head up proudly. He was well trained and handled at a smooth collected trot that showed off his nice balanced side movement. He also had good strong movement on the down and back. I loved his style of head, and he nearly won this class.

3. Zooropa Kenai Col Solare - a white and gray sable spotted male who moved with powerful drive. He had a pleasing outline with curves in all the right places.

4. Kinobi Lusso Silver Spur - a self gray sable with balanced proportions. Excellent, efficient movement on the down and back.

1. Ch Aashtoria Aruzia Java Chip - a tall elegant male, with red-sable spots. I loved his style of head, his lean back skull, strong underjaw, proper high set ears, and his soft intelligent expression. He was good moving, both from the side, and down and back. Won the class on his excellent topline. He was a stronger contender for best in sweeps.

2. Aashtoria Toffee Temptation -. Another handsome, red sabled male with excellent movement, he was almost identical to the first place dog.

3. Jubilee Renaissance Visions - a dark brindle dog, he had a pleasing outline, as well as good movement.

1. Aashtoria's Iced Mocha - a white and tan male with a partial black mask. Had a lovely soft expression with his black pigment. Won this class on his side movement.

2. Bee Hunter Matrioshka - a masculine white and red dog, with a nice outline.

This was an overwhelming class to judge, because of the high quality and consistency of type, of these puppies.

1. Horse and Hound L'Aquila Radost (Best In Sweeps). This white and red-gold spotted female caught my eye as soon as she walked into the ring. She looked like she was just 6 months old, but she had the poise of an adult. Every time she was asked to move, she did so, smoothly and efficiently. She had the topline I prefer, along with good forechest, depth of chest, and balance. She was well angulated but not over angulated in the rear. I was pleased that she won her class the next day under Patti Neale.

2. Horse and Hound Venezia - a beautiful white and gold female with black eyes and complete black pigment. Excellent mover and very similar in quality and type, to the other 3 puppies who placed.

3. Zabava Jubilee Edelweiss - a white and tan-sable spotted female. She was very happy in the ring, but nicely showed off her good movement. She had the black pigment, black eyes, and proper ears, combined with excellent reach and drive.

4. Horse and Hound Sarzna Radost - another pretty white and cream spotted female. She had excellent shoulder layback with a long upper arm. Also had good forechest and depth of chest.

1. Adrienne Bella Luna Once Upon a Time - A confident, showy, white and cream female, who had the look of "I'm having fun and I am the best in the ring". She was well angulated but not over angulated in the rear. She had balance, a topline I prefer, and beautiful head and expression. When she wasn't jumping and trying to get her handler to move faster, she demonstrated that she had sound efficient movement.

2. Vitrina Saratoga - a dark brindle female with great reach and drive. Also had good forechest and depth of chest.

3. Konstantin's Summer Rain - A lovely white and gold female, with a beautiful lean head. Excellent moving.

4 Bucksilver's Written in the Stars - a tall white female with red brindle spots. Excellent front with a long upper arm. Good pigment. Lean head.

Thank you for the honor of judging the puppies and veterans. It was exciting to see so many beautiful puppies, with well angulated fronts and rears, dark eyes, complete black pigment, and that soft intelligent expression. Nearly all the puppies had proper bites and full dentition. Their coats were of the proper silky texture. They had a variety of toplines and head styles. The puppies shown at this year's national were so promising, that the future of our breed looks bright. I had fun judging, but I sure wished I could have given out more first place ribbons, than just one first per class.

Veteran Sweepstakes - I was happy to see so many veterans with proper breed type, sound movement and good muscle tone.

Futurity Junior Dogs, 6 months and under 9 - CRITIQUE by Jana Brinlee

1st – A handsome, rather tall youngster, white with sable brindle. He is possessed of a pretty head with beautiful eyes and expression. His movement was easy on the go round, true coming and going, and he held a pretty shape.

2nd – A red brindle dog who turned out to be a littermate to the first place. This dog is a bit smaller and went second to his brother as he didn't reach quite as well in the front as the winner.

1st – A white and sable brindle, a youngster with beautiful scope of body, nice dark eyes, nice feet, pretty head, who moved easily both around and coming and going.

2nd – A beautiful gold and white with nice shape and beautiful veining on his face. Not quite as easy on the move, but nearly so.

3rd – A white and black who is a little shorter coupled. He didn't move quite as easily as the winner but is a pretty type dog.

4th – A large tri puppy dog, heavily marked. This dog has a lot of bone, with a beautiful eye. His front feet aren't his fortune, at least on the day, and I'd like to see him a little curvier over the croup.

2nd – Another white with gold head markings, typey bitch, lost to the winner on front action. Her front feet are down right now, I suspect teething the culprit, but she has beautiful veining and shows promise.

3rd – White and gold, nearly apricot colored, larger girl. She has a lot of bone but retains her prettiness. Would like her to have more curve over the croup and more rear angle.

4th – A white and apricot with sable head and freckles. This girl didn't do herself any favors in the movement department. She's a beautiful type but just didn't want to show herself off to her best advantage on the day.

Futurity Junior Bitches, 9 months and under 12 - CRITIQUE by Jana Brinlee

1st -A white and gold, really shapely who got better as the class went on. She has pretty feet, a beautiful headpiece, and is light on her feet. A very nice bitch especially in this age range.

2nd – A whitish bitch with a cobbier build. She's really pretty and she caught my eye right off the bat and I thought her the one to beat. I really like this bitch and she pressed the winner hard; I wish she had really turned it on. Turns out she is a littermate to the winner.

3rd – A gold with white trim bitch in a different style from the two previous. Light and easy on her feet. Nice headpiece more in line with the old Collie look, sound, with a beautiful temperament.

4th – a Tri bitch, nice scope to her body while retaining a lovely shape. Unfortunately, she was less than enthusiastic when asked to move.

1st – Mostly a self gold, a nice honest bitch, nothing fancy about her. A little plain in head for my preference but with a nice dark eye, good feet, real pretty coat, efficient in movement, good croup. One of the types of bitches you like to keep because you suspect she'll produce for you.

2nd – A sable and white bitch with a cute look about her. She was stylish but tended to break in her front action when she got going.

FUTURITY JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS by Jana Brinlee:

It was a lovely evening for judging the Futurity classes, with a relaxed pace reflected in the behavior of the young participants. The hospitality extended to me by Barbara O'Neill and the members of the Borzoi Club of America was gracious and much appreciated. Many thanks to Karen Mays, a capable and efficient ring steward, who kindly and pleasantly kept things running smoothly.

Before conveying individual entry comments, let me say my general impressions were very good. I had a nice breadth of type and ages to consider and I was pleased to see great improvement in some troublesome areas from years past. Overall soundness has very much improved. You may have noticed me looking at teeth, well, the breed is in good shape! I found but one off bite in the bunch. I realize that many of the youngsters were still in the teething stage and I accounted for this in my assessments, but hoped to give all the entries a good experience on which to build their show careers.

Best in Futurity - When the class winners came in my eye was immediately drawn to the bitches as I liked them all including the baby. It came between the 15-18 My Majenkir Regal Vixen Of Varykino and the 9-12 Adrienne Bella Luna Once In A Lifetime. Both are very nice bitches in their own right. Although different styles, they were both beautiful and I would have been happy to take either home with me (I wish). In the end, I preferred the headpiece on the 9-12 bitch and after several trips around the ring, she sealed it with a smooth and steady performance to win the night. She's a lovely girl whom I was pleased to award Best in Futurity.

Best Opposite Sex went to the flashy Junior Dog Jubilee Renaissance Visions from the 12-15 month class. He's a big boy with a big sidegait and showy presence. I was pleased to award him Best Opposite.

Stud Dog - This was an interesting class although but two entries. I recalled the babies who stood proudly behind their sire and remembered the numerous good qualities I had observed in them earlier in the evening. The class went to GCh. Jubilee Tad Bit O'Brindle Mist. As it turned out, the other dog in the class had sired the class winner so it was all in the family.

Brood Bitch - The recorder operator must have failed again and I sincerely apologize. I have no notes on this class. The winner was GCh. Jubilee Katushka Ebel.

I want you to know that I was honored to be selected by the breeders of these youngsters. Thank you for the beautiful entry. The future is bright for Borzoi. I was very pleased to see where you breeders have taken Borzoi—I can see it's in good hands. My heartiest congratulations to you.

I truly enjoyed myself. Many thanks to the club and exhibitors for a wonderful evening.
