BEST OF BREED – Ch. Sunburst Huntsman at Mechta. This dog exemplifies everything I could possibly want in a Borzoi. Powerful enough to hunt large prey yet beautiful and elegant in every respect. He has a correct topline and good angulation front and rear. His movement was extraordinary – beautiful reach and drive and sound as a dollar coming and going. A total package of Borzoi excellence.

BEST OF WINNERS - Auroral's Singin' In The Rain. This lovely dog came from the Bred by Exhibitor Class and his breeders can be proud indeed. A sound, balanced dog with wonderful type.

BEST OF OPPOSITE SEX – Ch. Majenkir Silver Filligree. A beautifully balanced bitch with great movement. Feminine yet strong. Everything you could want in a bitch to carry on the essence of Borzoi in generations to come.

AWARDS OF MERIT – I wish I had more AOM ribbons as there were many deserving champions in my ring this day. Any one of the Borzoi listed below could easily contend for BOB at another time. A truly magnificent display of beautiful Borzoi.

BEST PUPPY from the Regular Classes – Horse and Hound Ballymaloo. This beautiful baby won because he was a very sound mover who was all together on this day.

BEST VETERAN from the Regular Classes – Ch. Raynbo's Winter Rose. You would never guess this bitch was a veteran. She moved beautifully and presented a lovely outline.

BEST BRED BY EXHIBITOR in Show – Avalyn's Magnum Force. Well put together with great movement. Elegance together with substance.

WINNERS DOG – Auroral's Singin' In The Rain was a gorgeous dog with beautiful type and conformation and wonderful movement. A total package. I couldn't have asked for more.

RESERVE WINNERS DOG – Annwn Ascalon pushed the Winners Dog very closely. He also had beautiful type and a lovely headpiece. Moved like a dream.

WINNERS BITCH – Gladkii Veter Illusion O Matter was very well put together with lots of substance which I like to see in a brood bitch. A very nice headpiece and good return of upper arm. A very pleasant topline and deep chest. All of this without losing elegance and femininity or the ability to move smoothly.

RESERVE WINNERS BITCH – Sylvan Topanga Canyon was very good coming and going with smooth flowing reach and drive. A very elegant bitch with a nice headpiece and outline.

DOGS, 6 months and under 9 - CRITIQUE by Patricia Ulloa

1. Horse and Hound Ballymaloo: Good substance, balance and clean movement all around.

2. Horse 'N Hound Fardorocha of Kyrov: Also very well balanced and substantial and I liked him very much but he gave just a tiny bit on the movement and that made the difference.

3. Gryffyn's Aeyrie Rock N Roll Rebel: Very sound mover all the way around but lost to the second place dog due to substance and balance.

4. Gryffyn's Aeyrie Revelation: Nice mover but had a little less substance than I care for.

CONFORMATION JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS by Patricia Ulloa:

I first encountered a Borzoi over 30 years ago and two things have made them dear to my heart – their beauty and sweet temperament. They will always be the only dog for me.

To have the opportunity to judge the national was a dream come true. I was looking forward to seeing magnificent dogs and I was not disappointed.

The three days I spent in the ring were a joy. Overall I found the dogs to be of good quality. With few exceptions, they were balanced and pleasing to the eye. Some had insufficient return of upper arm but that has been a problem as long as I can remember. However it is also a problem in most other breeds and probably a universal challenge to all breeders. I found very few missing teeth or bad bites and no roman heads or extreme wheelbacks – two of my personal pet peeves.

The Best of Breed class took my breath away. Almost from the beginning I had to resort to nit-picking to make cuts. Little things such as loose coming and going or not quite the reach and drive I wanted to see. Perhaps a bit of missing pigment or a less than elegant headpiece. In the end my winners and award of merit dogs were all worthy champions who could easily contend for best of breed in another venue. To the breeders of these lovely dogs I say you should be very proud. If the dogs that came to the national are representative of the dogs to be found throughout the country, then I have to believe the breed is in great shape.

Before I comment on individual dogs, I would like to congratulate Barbara O'Neill and her show committee for putting on a great specialty. The grounds were immaculate and the rings showcased the dogs to their best advantage. How nice it was to see all that grass with the river as a backdrop. I especially want to thank Karen Mays and her helpers for keeping my ring organized. How hard the days would have been without their help. Now, as to the individual classes and dogs, my observations follow.

SWEEPSTAKES JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS by Mrs. Katrina Averill:

It was an honor and a pleasure to judge the Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes. I want to thank all the exhibitors for bringing me such quality Borzoi. Not only did the puppies show great promise but the overall quality of the entry was the best I've seen in a long while.

I saw some lovely elegant heads, dark eyes and pigment and many had nice length of neck. Almost all of the youngsters demonstrated correct tail carriage and many were very well balanced. I think that the breeders have paid a lot of attention to bites and dentition as this was not a problem in the ring. I like a full mouth but movement is just as important, if not more so.

A balanced Borzoi is apt to be a nice moving one. I like to see a very clean down and back. The front should not cross or have excess pastern flopping but must reach out and use the upper arm properly to give an effortless reach. Fronts are extremely difficult to correct, so I really appreciate a good one. The rears should also move smoothly with no crossing, wobbling, or stiffness. A balanced front and rear will work together to create a smooth, effortless, ground covering stride. A Borzoi can easily exhibit this type of movement without excessive speed. Most of the youngsters showed as if they had been showing all their lives. Once in a while a puppy was a little too happy (as puppies will be) and this made it hard to see true movement.

With puppies and their awkward growth stages, I had to make my choices based on their balance and movement on the day I saw them. I am always amazed at how different they can look only one day later and for those exhibitors who apologized for "dog show coat loss", I didn't pay any attention to the loss. I've been in that spot too. Once again thanks to the exhibitors for showing me such quality.

When I saw my final line up for Best In Sweepstakes, I was faced with a big challenge—how could I pick just two from such quality. After moving them again and again, I made my choices.

Best In Sweepstakes was awarded to Maskova's Affarre De Cour. This dynamite young lady came from the 6-9 class. She caught my eye as soon as she walked into the ring. She had excellent presence and that "look at me" attitude. She never put a foot wrong and exhibited that important smooth effortless reach with good use of her upper arm. She was impossible to ignore.

Best Opposite Sex went to Greyhaven Summer Wine from the 9-12 class. This young man had a nice head, neck and well balanced body. He was one of those Borzoi whose movement is outstanding. He had a clean consistent down and back but his sidegait had that something special that kept drawing my attention. That smooth effortless sidegait is a joy to watch.

Veteran Sweepstakes

Judging the Veteran Sweepstakes was a bitter-sweet experience. It is sweet because of all the wonderful veterans who strut their stuff. It is bitter because I could only pick one winner from each class. I must admit that at times it was hard to see through my tears at such quality senior citizens. These classes showed me that our Borzoi breeders are as concerned with "staying power" as they are with their upcoming stars. These veterans showed that they retained or exceeded the quality that they exhibited in their younger years. In fact, many of them really seemed to have gotten even better with the years. Their movement was exceptional—clean down and backs and effortless reaching sidegait. They all showed their pride and joy to be back in the ring. My hat is off to all of their breeders and owners.

My Best Veteran, DC Sylvan Seabury Virago, SC, was one of those quality Borzoi who has only improved with age. He still had his really nice head, neck and body. His sidegait and presence were even more impressive with age. He kept his mind on his performance and gave everything he was capable of and that his handler asked of him. While it was hard to pick one from the quality in the final Veterans' line up, he demanded the win and received it.

My Best of Opposite Sex Veteran, CH Del Sol Belle Starr, SC, was in marvelous shape for her age. She moved like a much younger girl and not the senior citizen she was. While she was given a run for money by the other "Golden Girls," her beauty, soundness and lovely movement were impressive. There was a special something about her that shouted "pick me," and I did.

Futurity Junior Dogs, 6 months and under 9 - CRITIQUE by Shirley McFadden

1. This dark brindle and white dog was very balanced with nice angulation. He was a nice mover from all directions, had a beautiful head with dark eye and soft expression, had excellent substance for his age and was very well put together. He also had a lovely profile, was pretty moving with good tail carriage and was in fabulous condition.

2. This blue sable (?) and white dog was also a nice mover, had a nice profile, topline, nice head, was well angulated and had good substance. Pretty sidegait and tail carriage.

3. This was a big boy who had nice clean movement and nice profile. Pretty moving also with good tail carriage. I believe he was a littermate to the 2nd place dog.

4. This little brindle boy had a really nice front, was nicely angulated in front and rear, also had a correct topline. He has a beautiful head as well

1. This gorgeous white dog had excellent sidegait, substance, a beautiful head and expression. He was well angulated in front and rear. He was in glorious full luscious coat. His overall beauty and movement was truly breathtaking and he was one of my favorite entrants. An elegant yet masculine boy. He was Best Junior Dog in Futurity

2. This self black dog was of a beautiful type and outline, very nice mover, exquisite head, tiny high set ears and lovely expression. He was very clean on the down and back and had nice tail carriage. He has nice sidegait but was just out moved by a hair by the first place dog on the final go around.

Futurity Senior Dogs, 18 months and under 21 - CRITIQUE by Shirley McFadden

1. This was a very elegant and handsome silver brindle and white dog with excellent movement in all directions. Flawless coming and going. "To die" for reach and drive–floated with long ground-covering movement. Lovely profile standing and moving. Well angulated in front and rear. Nice slight bend in pasterns, correct topline and carried tail low. A masculine head with dark beautifully-shaped eye, correct ears, with a lovely long neck in proportion to his size. Excellent substance and condition and in luscious coat. He was the Best Senior Dog and Best Opposite Sex in Futurity.

2. Another nice boy of substance, lovely profile and in excellent coat and overall condition. Correct head and pretty expression. Nicely angulated and balanced. Very nice sidegait.

3. Yet another beautiful boy with lots of substance, angulation and sidegait. I learned the first three placements in this class are by same sire and 2nd and 3rd were littermates. They were very consistent in type and movement.

4. A pretty red and white boy with lovely head and expression. Nice long neck in proportion to his body. Nice topline and tail carriage. Good reach and drive.

1. This little tri bitch was exquisite. She had a lovely headpiece with a soft beautiful eye and expression. Nice topline and tail set. Nicely angulated front and rear. Was balanced and was a pretty profile standing as well as moving. She was feminine without over refinement. Good substance and condition, dressed in luscious puppy curls. She was clean/flawless on the down and back and her sidegait was breathtaking-floated around the ring like a grown special. Beautiful reach and drive with PERFECT tail carriage all the way around–impressive for such a young girl. I had my eye on her from the first moment she came into the ring and she never let me down. She asked for it and she got it. She won Best Junior Bitch and Best in Futurity.

2. A brindle and white bitch with very nice substance and in great condition. She had a beautiful head and pretty dark eye. Nice lovely profile standing. Nicely angulated and balanced. Clean on the down and back and from what I could see :>) nice sidegait as well. She was having fun; I think she had the best time of all. A solid little bitch with a lot of nice attributes.

3. A red and white girl of lovely breed type. Solid body in great condition. Nicely angulated and balanced front and rear. Clean coming and going. Very pretty sidegait with nice tail carriage.

4. Probably the youngest in the class, this petite sable girl was very correct. She had a beautiful head with a lovely dark eye and expression. Nicely angulated and balanced. Nice topline and great tail carriage.

FUTURITY JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS by Shirley McFadden:

Once again I want to express my gratitude to the breeders for this opportunity and privilege. In my individual observations below, I am only focusing on the qualities I saw in each Borzoi rather than the deficits. Overall I thought the entry was very nice.

Perfect front sets with good layback of shoulder, upper arm return, along with clean and well reaching out front movement seemed to be the Holy Grail and all of those qualities were found in just a few. However, sidegait was the majority of the time adequate to superb, as was rear movement. There were many nice heads of many acceptable types per our standard. Toplines were overall very nice with just a few outlines of the extremes. There were only one or two bites that were not correct and they were just slightly under and a few with popped lower middle two incisors. There were a handful of entrants with missing teeth and I feel this is something we really need to watch. The quality was deep and some of the classes were especially nice and competitive. It was nice to see such a large quality entry from all over the country and it was even nicer to have the opportunity to really go over them. I applaud my fellow breeders for what they are striving for and accomplishing in their breeding programs.
