General Specials CRITIQUE by Dr. Alfred W. Edlin:

Best of Breed was a pleasure to judge, with many of the country's best Borzoi stepping into the ring for consideration. Trimming the class down to the number needed for the top awards and awards of merit was almost painful and some very good dogs went with no acknowledgement except their place in the cut. However, I was left with marvellous dogs to work with and when I name the Award of Merit animals, you will see what I mean. The males were Ch. Polsfuss and W. Miller and owned by Marilyn Polsfuss. The bitches were Ch. Del Sol Zigeunerin of Kyrov, JC, breeder-owner Susan Van De Water; Ch. Monarch Chrystal Chandelier, bred and owned by Shawn and Tammy Smith, co-bred by Chris and Patti Neale; Ch. Pagerr Sunday Sonata, bred and owned by Ginny Kerr; Ch. Raynbo's Fairy Tale Princess, bred and owned by Roni and Jennifer Zucker; Ch. J.A.Y. Seabury JP Affectionately, bred by Jay Ito, co-owned by Dr. James Sillers and Chris and Patti Neale ; and the Winners Bitch. These are all really beautiful animals, about as good as Borzoidom gets, ever, and I gave them all careful consideration but the lovely Veteran bitch was not to be denied, and took Best of Breed. She is, once again, Ch. RR Li'l Egypt of the Wild Hunt. BW, BOS over all those gorgeous boys was the Winners Dog. When we took the pictures, I found out he is both a Canadian Ch. and a multi BIS winner in Canada, and that this is his first US show, so he is properly styled Can. Ch. Taugo's B Flyte of Ryzann

Brace Class - CRITIQUE by Dr. Alfred W. Edlin

I had two handsome Brace entries but the winner was outstanding. I date back to the time when Brace competition was much more common, and I remember some wonderful braces of various breeds. This brace could hold its own in any competition. They are Katushka's Dorothy Gish and Katushka's Theda Bara, owned and beautifully trained and handled by Joyce Law, and it was no surprise to learn that they have over 20 all-breed Best Brace in Show, and eight specialty wins.

And then there was another Brace. Part human, part Borzoi, all mischievous, they were rumored to be (I have no real information) Cricket Murray and Mitzi Rosenlund. What I really want to know is, which was the Borzoi who lifted its leg upon the innocent judge?

CONFORMATION JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS by Dr. Alfred W. Edlin:

Before I get into my critique, let me say a few things about the specialty in general. First of all, the headquarters hotel is the best I remember since we started rotating the National. It was large and well-appointed, located right off an interstate and very accessible to the airport and to downtown, with 5 or 6 restaurants of various ethnic persuasions within walking distance, and much more within a short drive. The staff was friendly and competent; the ballroom had plenty of room for a National. The only time I had to split classes was in Best of Breed competition. From my somewhat insulated and isolated position within the ring, I heard not a complaint. The fabulous Carol Enz and her very able and hard-working committee had all aspects of the show under good control. May it always be so.

I would like to thank BCOA and its members for selecting me to judge our National specialty. It is a great honor and was a great deal of fun as well.

There are a few words I would like to say about my ring stewards, Sharon and Tim Robinson: capable, experienced, unflappable, courteous are just some of them. They smoothed the way for me constantly, and kept the ring organized with what seemed no effort at all.

As for the dogs: I had a significant number of very refined, very fine-boned, slab-sided, skinny no-substance animals shown to me. Needless to say, none such received a placement. Within the Borzoi's status as a sighthound, there needs to be sufficient bone, substance, rib spring, heart and lung room. Toothpicks for limbs are not mentioned in the standard.

As you can imagine, with an entry of over 300 dogs there were some very fine entries. In the class dogs, my favorites come down to the winner of the Bred-by class, Kyrov's Virtuosity Chataqua, bred and owned by Amy Sorbie, Sara Whittington and Wayne Rowe; the 12-18 month class winner, Majenkir My Way, bred and owned by Karen Staudt-Cartabona; and the Open Winner, Taugo's B Flyte of Ryzann, bred and owned by Merla Thomson and Lee Ann Shank. The 12-18 dog is an imposing dog, with a very pleasing outline, clean in movement, and stood out in the best male class of the day. The Bred-by dog had an exceptionally beautiful head and expression, a lovely eye, great presence, very pretty in silhouette standing and moving. When I finally saw a catalogue, I was pleased to find that this was the dog I had admired as a puppy when he won the 1996 Sweepstakes. The open Dog blew me away—he was a fully mature male in beautiful coat, outstanding movement in all directions, as good to the hand as he was to the eye. Not without a few minor flaws but very little and very fine compared to his great virtues. He was Winners Dog, and Reserve was Majenkir My Way.

Among the bitch class winners, the standouts to me were the Open Bitch, who won a very tough class. She was Virshina Sweet Pea, bred by Chris Bradley, and co-owned by Sherry Neigum. Lovely and correct sidegait, beautiful side profile, very good in expression. Outstanding was the Bred-by winner, Gavril Sky Run Vidalia Sweet, bred by Michael and Shirley Rehberg and Barbara Skinner, owned by the Rehbergs and Rachel Rehberg Gongre. This bitch had a very pretty head and neck, pretty profile stacked, nice side gait and very clean coming and going—she was Winners bitch. The 12-18 month bitch was Greyhaven Devil or Angel, bred and owned by Marilyn Polsfuss, with a face to die for, pretty mover, lovely in profile. And the 6-9 month winner, Majenkir Solara, bred and owned by Karen Staudt-Cartabona, had the most beautiful balanced, free, very clean movement, which won her Reserve Winners.

The Veterans Winners were all dogs I had admired in their prime, all holding up well under the pressures of age. Looking very handsome were Ch Swiftess Romantic Egotist, JC, bred by K. Cook and C. Cook-Hunchak, owned by Cherie Hunchak and Rhanda Glenn, and Ch. Savladai Build On A Dream, bred and owned by Helen Lee, each winning their respective 7-10 year classes. The standout veteran to me was from the over 10 years bitch class, Ch. RR Li'l Egypt of the Wild Hunt, bred by Ariel Duncan and co-owned by her with Harriet Grube, looking as good as she had years before, and that is saying quite a lot.

Ch. Rossak of Enfield was the sole entrant in this age group, in wonderful coat, good weight, a lovely expression and good mouth. He covered the ground effortlessly, has a remarkable neckset and shoulder, good topline and strong loin. A dog with an outstanding hindquarters and although he has a lot of rear angulation, it is carried on strong broad hocks with strength and purpose.

SWEEPSTAKES JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS by Mrs. Barbara Skinner:

The setting was beautiful, the ring was perfect in size, my ring stewards were experienced and the borzoi just lovely. I was thrilled to have the honor to evaluate the entry of 98 puppies and 21 veterans at this National Specialty. My sincere thank you to the exhibitors for giving me the pleasure of judging their borzoi, to the members of the BCOA for this opportunity and to the Show Committee and Secretary for their hard work and attention to details which made the event a pleasure to judge.

My overall impression of the youngsters I judged was a positive one. The borzoi exhibited were of good temperament, well trained, good body, respectable coat and except for a small number of the pre-adolescent bitches, in good weight. Eyes were dark, pigment well defined and dark, nearly all the exhibits had full dentition, and the toplines were for the most part proper and functional.

Overall structural concerns that recurred throughout this entry of youngsters were minimal, yet will prove challenging for breeders. These are focused on two very important areas: Front assemblies with steep shoulders and cat feet. Also of concern, yet readily curable, was the number of borzoi presented that could benefit from a tooth brush or tooth scaler. Along with the training and the bathing, good show presentation should include good dental hygiene.

Best in Sweepstakes was awarded to Soyara's Chantilly Lace who was challenged by Renaissance Normandy Coast.

Best Opposite Sex in Sweepstakes was awarded to Oaklara Shadow Dancer in a hot contest with Majenkir My Way.

The Veterans were the highlight of this event for me. Such depth of quality and good health in ALL the entrants! It was so difficult to have to pick one. All the competitors carried their ages with exceptional vitality, beauty, strength and soundness. No tears for these grand and glorious seniors; I was smiling from ear to ear at their beauty and grace. Their condition and health is a tribute to not only their various bloodlines but also a clear indication of the care, love and devotion of their owners. They are our breed's 'golden' treasures. None of these dogs were strangers to me, as I had seen them compete since their first puppy classes. What a thrill to see them all looking so youthful and dignified.

The Best In Veteran Sweeps competition had seven exceptional seniors standing in the ring. A time span of over 5 years separated the youngest veteran from the oldest. Before me was the most difficult challenge of my judging experience to date. The Best In Veteran Sweeps award came down to a decision between two males, Ch. Kyrov's Crescendo and Ch. Rossak of Enfield. The award for Best Opposite was a difficult choice between Ch. RR Lit Egypt Of The Wild Hunt SC and Ch. Elmden Cresset Iz Ves Tia. In the end, Ch. Rossak of Enfield was awarded Best Veteran In Sweepstakes with Ch. Elmden Cresset Iz Ves Tia receiving Best Opposite Sex Veteran.
