General Specials CRITIQUE by Patti Widick Neale:

As in years past, the gathering of all the Specials in the ring at the same time was an inspirational sight. The more I am involved with other breeds, the more I appreciate the temperament of Borzoi who can be packed in so closely with the excitement of the spiralling parade, without a grumble.

Once again, the quality in this class was such that about half the Specials made the first cut. The second round still left more worthy Borzoi than could be formally rewarded with ribbons. The final twelve left standing included eight dogs and four bitches, in addition to Winners Dog and Bitch. Each met the "whole dog" requirements to a high degree, had many of the finer details and moved freely.

That afternoon, Ch. Sky Run Hemlock Hollow Rerun CD best exemplified the combination of power and beauty that make the Borzoi a working sighthound. This full-bodied, stately, absolutely sound white dog glided around the ring, and was eye-catching in the line-up with the right curves and angles. His excellent coat and condition finished the picture.

The Breed winner's counterpart of the opposite sex was the very feminine Ch. Raynbo's Fairy Tale Princess. Her classic outline, lovely head and expression, condition and gait combined to produce an image of elegance and athleticism.

Throughout the Specialty, cooperation by exhibitors with my instructions for ring procedure was so complete, that I was able to give my full attention to each dog, knowing that the next one would be in place, or ready to move at the right time. The orderly management of the cuts necessary to work with large classes in limited space was accomplished by the competent stewarding of Karen Mays, Sharon Robinson and my husband Chris.

I would like to express my appreciation to all the fanciers for sharing their dogs with me and the show committee for a job well done.

Wind 'n Satin Hot Off The Press - A heavy boned, long-bodied red and white charmer with good expression and coat, the youngest dog in his class. He motored smoothly around the ring with head up and a wonderful attitude.

Entwood Ivan Grozny - Elegant red brindle with good Borzoi details; long, smooth head with dark eyes and soft expression, small ears; just the right amount of bone, and proper bend of pastern and stifle. Curvy and well angulated, he covered ground with a smooth efficient stride, a standout in his age group. In Winners class, his lack of maturity was far outweighed by these strong points, and he rose above the Open dog by virtue of his outline and carriage on the move.

Po Dusham Ghost of a Chance - A nicely bodied-up white dog, very clean on the down and back, a bit too short in the loin, with beautiful expression, good coat and condition. In his class, he covered ground smoothly with a long stride and good carriage, but let down in the Winners class. A close second in this class was the stylish black and white Warwind Jailhouse Rock, who gave to the first dog on shoulder.

Ryzann's Cavalcade JC - A tall masculine tricolor in prime condition. Deep chest, excellent bone, strong, sweeping hindquarters. Long neck, tail and stride. With excellent carriage, and majestic appearance, he was Reserve to the 12-18 dog. A strong second was Attaway Scarlet Sage Cresset, a sound and bodied up mahogany dog, also in lovely condition.

Ridgeside Be My Love was the youngest in her class, with the poise of an adult. All white, and still in soft puppy curls, she had the shoulder and outline that always draw the eye, smooth and extended while gaiting. Good bone and substance, nice details and very clean coming and going, this bitch was a strong contender in the Winners class against the Open and Bred By bitches.

A very large and competitive class, as well it should be at the National Specialty, with nearly half the entry included in the first cut. Seven beautiful bitches made the final cut and it was with great regret that I could only choose four whose placements are in the record. Those excellent girls just beyond the ribbons were Baryoon's Passionate Interlude, Majenkir Avalyn Kitana and Gladkii Veter C'Est Moi.

First in the class was Vitrina Zoetrope, a substantial silver brindle spotted bitch in top muscular condition with a flawless outline both standing and moving. Her long neck flowed seamlessly into long sloping shoulders balanced by well-angulated hindquarters. She moved around the ring smoothly, as her conformation dictated, with a long stride and excellent carriage. With the finishing details of dark eyes and pigment, small ears, and graceful curves in all the right places, she went on to Best of Winners.

The combined Veteran entry of 39 must have been a BCOA record. Thirteen entrants were over 10 years old; the oldest bitch was well past 13 and still sprightly. I hope that this display was indicative of improved longevity in the breed overall.

I was reminded by my steward that only first place was to be awarded in each class. Without intent of slighting the others in the first Veteran dog class, I chose the single winner without making a cut, a mistake that I did not repeat with the bitches. MANY of the veterans would have been contenders in Best of Breed competition, and indeed one of them remained so.

Seven year old Ch. Sky Run Hemlock Hollow Rerun CD won his large class, that included several males that were top 10 competitors only recently.

CONFORMATION JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS by Patti Widick Neale:

It was the highlight of my life "in Borzoi" to be given the opportunity to judge the National Specialty. I had four days to savor the experience of choosing the best of the breed I love, and never was there a dull moment. Class after class of beautiful creatures, in glorious colors and most of them in coat, were a wonderful sight.

My task as the judge was to see past the surface and find those individuals with the greatest number of good qualities as defined by the Standard. Whole dog is always the first consideration. The critical qualities that make up the essence of the Borzoi as defined in the General Appearance and Gait sections of the Standard, are most apparent when a Borzoi is moving around the ring in profile on a loose lead. Neck, topline, tail carriage, extension, balance and grace are given high priorities since they are defining elements of type and construction.

The physical examination takes inventory of the small details of the dog as well as the important qualities of substance, ribspring and muscular condition, less discernible to the eye.

There were many Borzoi that were strong in the "whole dog" department, and those were the dogs that made the first cut. Individuals that survived a second cut or made the ribbons, possessed more of the fine details. Ranking of the final four in each class usually returned to carriage, extension, and grace. In the most competitive classes, where several dogs were closely matched, performance became a factor at the end.

Body substance and bone were good throughout most of the entry, as were pasterns and feet. Temperaments were excellent. There were very few unacceptable toplines or bad bites. A number of Borzoi were quite overweight, or in marshmallow muscle tone, to the detriment of their movement.

I was frequently disappointed with atypical expressions; round eyes, light eyes, prominent haws, small sunken eyes, forward-facing "monkey" eyes. Large, dark almond-shaped eyes were rare. I found as many extra premolars as I did missing teeth, about eight percent in the males, a few less in bitches, and about ten percent of the specials.

The winners of each class had so many things in common with each other that describing their good points becomes quite repetitive.

Fifteen Borzoi competed in 3 equally weighted events for which they receive d numeric scores: the Specialty lure coursing trial, the Specialty obedience trial, and the Triathlon conformation class. For this special class, the Specialty conformation judge used a score sheet based on the breed standard, to give each dog a Conformation score. The Triathlon dogs also had to be entered in a regular conformation class at the Specialty. Bonus points were awarded to those dogs winning placements in the regular conformation class, the obedience class and the lure coursing stake.

SWEEPSTAKES JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS:

I consider it an honor to have been elected to judge the BCOA National Sweepstakes this year. I found it highly educational to have the opportunity to examine such a select group of quality puppies. I thoroughly enjoy judging dogs but do not have much of an opportunity to do this "hands on", as I still am quite active in breeding and showing my own dogs, and so do not have my license.

Borzoi breeders have a right to be proud of what they are producing. I feel that the overall quality of Borzoi is at an all-time high. This is my personal assessment of the dogs in the group I judged, based on my three-plus decades of involvement in the sport. This good quality is present in all Borzoi representing numerous breeders and bloodlines. Borzoi type, coat, body and, to a somewhat lesser extent, movement, have greatly improved over the years. The extreme has not become too prevalent and many dogs still resemble our foundation Russian imports.

This certainly does not mean we can all sit back and rest on our laurels; there is always need for improvement. As the pendulum continues to swing, in this case towards a more extreme show look, we must continue to try to preserve correct type. I see dogs in the near future becoming taller and leggier, with correspondingly less body depth. The toplines are sliding further forward, and becoming more arched with too much fallaway. Side movement becomes more exaggerated, with the danger being that a working dog trot, rather than sighthound trot, is becoming accepted as correct. Since they will win in some show rings, the more extreme" type" tends to be selected for. As breeders there are some features that we must constantly select for to preserve true type. Once lost, some things are gone from the gene pool completely. If that happens, the only way to reintroduce them is from outside of the breeding program.

If I were to choose the one word which applies to all aspects of my judging, it is "balance." By this I mean balance of all parts. Of course the dog must have type and look like a Borzoi. How many modern dogs lack any breed type? If anything, we err towards extreme in type: heads too long, too narrow in width or depth of jaw: too much leg, even too much coat. To all of this I apply my favorite word, "Balance."

When all else is pleasing and nothing glares, I select for the hound with the best sighthound front. A good layback of scapula and correspondingly balanced layback of arm, point of shoulder to elbow. From there I go to the topline and select for a smoothly rising loin, gently "rounded" in all directions, and strongly muscled. I prefer a more boned-up Borzoi with some body width, rather than an "angel fish" body on legs.

I was quite thrilled to find enough quality present for me to select and choose among so many youngsters. More than a few I would loved to have taken home with me! Among my top winners were Borzoi who could win in any era. They would be competitive in any country. If given the opportunity to run, they would excel on the coursing field. They have those qualities that should pass beneficial breed genes on to the next generation.

My Best in Sweepstakes winner, the ice-white Ridgeside Be My Love, is a standout who radiates correct type. Her beautiful head and sweet expression, with the blackest of eyes and pigment, were framed by tiny expressive ears. I was so pleased to find, when I put my hands on her, her skeletal structure was what it appeared, and not scissored in.

My handsome Best Of Opposite Sex dog, Avalyn Metallic Dragan, is a striking silver brindle, with flashy white trim. She a feminine porcelain doll, he the bold young stallion hound. Apart from the contrast in color and gender differences, they could easily have been littermates. They both have correct sighthound shoulders, with arm placement set well back. Both have correct, smooth toplines, well muscled and gently rounded in all directions. Strong, well-curved hindquarters with long, flat racing muscles, and short wide hocks complete the picture. They both "stand over a lot of ground," which gives them the room to reach and drive without crabbing. Movement from the side, as well as coming and going was balanced and strong for such young dogs. I liked both pups equally. That day I found the bitch a bit more together, as would be expected due to her sex. I would have preferred the dog to be a pound or two less in weight.

There were many other pups that I thought to be excellent Borzoi. Quality was such that at no time did I entertain the thought of withholding ribbons on a dog for lack of merit. This is something that I, as a breeder, believe should be done when necessary.

When my Veteran classes walked into the ring, the dogs were truly breathtaking, and a credit to the fancy. Few modern breeds can hold up as well as our Borzoi, who seem to continue to improve with age the majority of their lives. The Veteran dog who went on to win Best in Show later in the week has improved every year of his life. While I found the BISS dog spectacular in type, a good mover, and groomed to perfection, I gave the nod to the older male, Ch Reggae's Tahoe Barbera Drew, SC, FCh. I based the decision on his extra years and how well he was holding his age. So much of the winning dog was hidden under his massive coat. Drew is an exceptional mover who is totally balanced throughout. A true coursing hound, yet not overdone, he still had enough elegance to be a show dog.

My Veteran bitch classes almost blew me out of the ring. It was hard to assess these proud grande dams with a dry eye. Each time I went over to the judge's table I dabbed at my eyes with tissues, and feared my contacts would float away! Those Veteran bitches, especially the "10 years and older classes" are a sight I will always remember. How I hated having to choose just one. The quality of their noble heritage was evident in their expression, carriage and bearing. Clear-eyed and proud, some a bit stiff in movement, but overall quite happy to be back in the ring, strutting their stuff and receiving recognition that was their due. Perhaps I moved all of the Veterans around the ring a few too many times but none of them appeared to suffer for it. I did want spectators to get a good look at these Borzoi who are an important part of the present and future dogs. The qualities so evident in each of these classical Veterans should not be lost in the quest for the ultimate showdog.

My winner, Am. Can. Ch. Pagerr Pennyroyal, I later learned, celebrated her 13th birthday that week! She possesses so much of what I consider to be the "ancient type" Borzoi characteristics that are still present in the breed. Allowing for her age and some stiffness, she was still very sound and balanced. She is of exceptional type, with so much strength of quarters, combined with a low, wide, hock. Her shoulder and arm are set correctly. She possesses beautiful balance of outline, marred a bit by her topline, which was slightly flattened by age. She was still quite nicely muscled.

When judging, I attempt to "talk" to the spectators with the use of my hands. As I examine each dog, I follow bone structure to show what is to be found under the coat; layback or lack of shoulder, depth or shallowness of underline, etc. I try to point out a problem or virtues of each dog, or, what I am basing my decision on. One example being two class dogs, both with the severe fault of "popping hocks". I showed their presence by gently pushing the hocks forward from behind at the point of the hock.

Borzoi mouths were a pleasant surprise. I found the majority of mouths to be exceptionally good, which they have not been in past years. Bites and premolars were in correct alignment, with few dogs missing teeth. The size of the teeth were good, large and strong.

The dogs were clean and well presented. While a few dogs could have used a bit more trimming to show off finer points, I found the opposite to be true in the majority. I believe entirely too much trimming is being done. It surprises me when so many clean a hock by shaving it behind. This accents the fault of a hock which is high and narrow! There is also the fad of cleaning up the wither area, especially on dogs who tend to carry manes or "angel wings". The attempt is to have the neck appear long and elegant. This trimming is easily carried to the extreme. When the dog moves, the elegant illusion is shattered when the dog appears ungainly and unbalanced with a "hole" at the withers! The same applies to the extreme trimming and flattening of the croup hair. When the dog moves, it appears as though he is being shoved forward from the rear. I was surprised to feel so much artificial substance being used on the coats, many of them to the point where they had lost the lovely natural soft, silky feel, and instead were stiff or sticky and gummy.

There is always the need for improvement in shoulders. This is true in all breeds. Most breeders will agree that shoulders are the hardest point to introduce and to set in one's line. Hocks need to be watched. Several breeders in selecting for more leg length are doing so at the expense of having this length come with an accompanying higher, narrow hock. This type hock can ruin rear movement, as the dog kicks out to each side when going away.

I was surprised to find more than a few problems in tails. Some were too short, reaching just to the hock. Others had knots or kinks. Several were too tight or ringed. I do not fault a puppy's happy tail; this to me indicates a stable temperament. However I feel differently about tight tendons in a ringed tail. I believe this follows through in the entire structure of the dog, and will effect the overall movement. The tail is actively used as a rudder and for balance when running, and is an important feature of the sighthound. Some believe that since the tail is the finish of the skeletal structure of the spine, it becomes as important a feature as a correct topline.

I found it amusing when an overseas spectator mentioned to me he thought that "I worked too hard at my judging, I was supposed to have fun." It certainly was not work for me. I enjoyed every moment and became completely absorbed in the dogs. It was definitely my idea of fun! §
