There are fifty-seven entered in Best Of Breed with one move-up which makes fifty-eight, plus Winners Dog, Winners Bitch, Veteran Dog and Veteran Bitch. Best Of Breed in this magnificent entry of Borzoi Specials is the lovely tri-colored bitch (Ch. Fox Run's Ivy Rose). She easily bested this handsome field. She to me is the happy combination of exquisite beauty, combined with great function. She's a great showman, she's in magnificent condition, she's perfectly beautiful from the side and then does not disappoint on her coming and going. She has a level top skull, she has the substance and strength and yet she's feminine. Best Of Opposite Sex to the very correct, very handsome white dog (Ch. Majenkir Arcticus). He also combined beauty with a great deal of utility. Very good coming and going, good level top skull, enough bone and substance to get his job done but elegant enough to appear very beautiful. Best Of Winners to the very, very pretty Winners Bitch (Sky Run Codie Grae). She also received an Award Of Merit. Thank you all - it was a pleasure for me.

Fifteen in the 12-18 months class. Here we continue our quest for a tall handsome hound, built as a machine to do his work. We've come very close with this dog that stands in first (Rabrega Crescent Moon). He's a tall imposing hound with a lovely head, a good mouth; he uses himself very well on his own, standing as well as moving. He had the advantage here in angles, depth and correctness; he's a very handsome hound. Second to a fawn and white parti-colored hound (Rusalka Enchanter). The dog at the head of the line had the advantage in spring of rib and depth but this young dog is a very handsome dog; covers the ground well and effortlessly with a lovely head and eye. The third dog (Starwind Chervanek Domino Fx) is a full-coated fawn and white dog, perhaps could be shown to a little better advantage. The young man showing him babies him a little bit too much. He doesn't realize that being a show dog is serious business. He is inclined to bounce a little bit too much when he's being moved. He's a moderate-sized dog that takes a lovely long stride; he's a full coated dog with a very attractive outline. Fourth to an almost nearly white hound (Majenkir Monogram). This dog lacks a little in length of leg in here. But I think he'll come up a little bit more; once again we're talking here about a dog with a lot of angles at both ends. The dog that placed ahead of this dog had the advantage in correctness in front conformation but this is a dog that takes a lovely long stride, and keeps his topline and his underline. A very impressive class.

DOGS, Bred by Exhibitor - CRITIQUE by Mrs. Anne Rogers Clark

Eighteen entered in the Bred-By Exhibitor class. There appear to be three absent. There are a lot of Borzoi that survived the cut in this quality-filled Bred-By Exhibitor Dog class. It was a beautiful class to look at and a fun class to judge. First in the class is a mature mahogany and white dog (Shefaro Reyna's Emperador Fnx). A big imposing dog, beautiful outline, handles himself very, very well on the move. He dominated the class. Second to a tri-colored dog, lightly marked; very similar in type to the dog that won the class previous (Rabrega Black Moon Rising II). The dog that won the class here had the advantage in maturity and outline and he's just a little more compact. The second dog is a very handsome dog, had the advantage in eye expression. The third dog is a dog of smaller stamp (Chervanek's Starwind Comrade). A very typey dog; a dog with a lot of angles. A very smooth moving dog with a lovely topline, he's just not mature enough in front to be any more competitive in this class than he is. He has a beautiful eye. The fourth dog is a mahogany and white dog, mainly white (Swiftess Romantic Egotist). A very handsome dog, great maturity in body and form. The dog that placed ahead of him had the advantage in having a few more angles both in front and behind. A very beautiful class, a lot of dogs very handsomely presented.

There are six entered in the American Bred Dog class. We appear to have two absentees. Just four in the American Bred Dog class. First to a very lightly-marked fawn and white dog (Spotless Reputation D'Russe, CD, FCh.). Of classic outline, well handled and shown. Had the advantage of steadiness as well as his type in this class. Second to sable parti-colored hound (Shiloh's Laska Of Cornerstone), who could have won the class had he settled down a little bit. He had the advantage in here of good use of his front but was a little too much all over the place; he just needs to settle down and have some age. The third dog is a handsome dog (Bon Ton's D'Dazzler Of Oaklara). The second had the advantage in mouth. And the fourth dog was a beautiful dog standing but refused to use himself adequately on the move (Wolstencroft's Triumph).

On to the Open Dog class. This was a very handsome class to look at overall, with a lot of the dogs rather mature and shown in pretty mature coat. A lot of dogs survived the cut. The dog that stands at the head of the line, a mahogany and white dog who won the class on the basis of his outline and ability to take a stride (Silkenswift Cotopaxi, FCh.). He's tall and imposing; he is a very handsome dog with a very easy way of going. Needless to say he had a nice neck and shoulder, proper amount of angulation behind, came and went very soundly and went very, very decently from the side. The second dog is a handsome white and sable dog (Taugo's Vodka On The Rocks). A good bit older than the dog that won the class, he has the advantage in here of maturity. However, the dog that won the class has the advantage of a little bit more positive topline at all times and is slightly better in pastern. The third dog is very similar to the dog that won the class (Wolstencroft's Morgan). He's a fawn and white dog, not quite the maturity that the winning dog has; wasn't quite as pleasing going away. The fourth dog is a very mature dog (Kumasan's Hunyak Of Tradition). I believe he is seven. This dog is the proper balance and proportion for this breed. Shown in handsome coat, good big rib and good hard muscle. The dogs that were placed ahead of him were just a tad more agile on the move. Nice class, nice placements.

BITCHES, 6 Months and Under 9 - CRITIQUE by Mrs. Anne Rogers Clark

It is stated in the judging schedule we will not do Winners Dog until a completion of the Bitch classes that are scheduled for today, so at 12:45 p.m. we will start with the 6-9 month Puppy Bitches. There appears to be one absent in this class of eleven. The 6-9 month Puppy Bitch class is dominated by the fawn and white bitch, mostly white who was in first (Majenkir Po Dusham Rubaiyat). Well off for breed type and character, she's in immaculate condition, in great body condition; she's a very, very pretty bitch. She ran away with the class. Second to a mostly red bitch with a dark face very similar in type of the bitch that won the class (Sontse Firedanz). Not the ring deportment nor outstanding condition of the puppy that won the class. Third is a tri-color baby bitch, beautiful type; just a little unsteady on her legs because she is such a baby girl (Kenrics Rabrega LA Law). The fourth bitch is very similar in type to the first, just not quite as good on her legs as the first bitch but with very pretty type (Rabrega Lady Peach).

There are eleven entered in the nice 9-12 Puppy Bitch class. Won by a white and sable bitch (Karitonova Creme De Cacao). This bitch is not the most joyful competitor that ever came down the pike. However, she's a beautiful bitch in outline, very well off for angles at both ends, handsome headed. Once she's thinking about it, she is quite sound coming and going and takes a nice stride from the side. Her loin is arched in the right place. Second is a very typical Borzoi bitch (Sar Shan Sa's Bernadette). She had the advantage in temperament here, however the bitch that won the class had the advantage in angles. Third to a bitch rather similar in type to the bitch that won the class just would not use herself at all times positively (Majenkir Beliy Mushka Of VS). Nice bitch in beautiful weight and coat and good condition, she's an all white or all cream bitch. The fourth bitch is a tri-colored bitch with a dark saddle (Cernaks Sunday's Best). Very attractive to look at, has a much better topline than she looks. She's got a topline you can feel under your hand. She looks rather level in topline standing there looking at her but her topline is there. She's full in season and not really feeling up to the competition.

BITCHES, 12 months and under 18 - CRITIQUE by Mrs. Anne Rogers Clark

There are twenty-four entered in the 12-18 Bitch class. This was a well filled class, a mixture of types. First place was won by a very handsome, very imposing tall bitch with a lot of substance but by no means masculine (Majenkir Incognita). She came and went very soundly, had the ability to open her shoulder from the side and shove with her hindquarter. She had the advantage in here of muscle, substance, spring of rib and with it all femininity. She's a parti-colored bitch. Second to a cream bitch, very close between these two bitches even though they are different types (Majenkir Mademoiselle). The winning bitch had the advantage in outline, she just has a tad more leg and balances off a little bit more on her outline than the bitch who went second. The bitch that went second is a beautiful bitch on her angles and comes and goes very well and has a lovely way of going from the side. I preferred the top skull also of the bitch that won the class. The bitch in second recedes a little bit in top skull but I like this bitch and I like the many things that she has about her. Her topline is in the right place, she's a very smooth, very lovely bitch. The third bitch is a bit very similar in type to the winning bitch (Majenkir Artic Crystal). The bitch that won the class and the bitch that was second in the class had the advantage over the third place bitch in the placement of her shoulder and the amount of angle there. And the fourth place bitch is rather similar in type to the second place bitch (Starwind Spotles O'Chervanek). She's not quite as good in her angles as the bitch that's placed above her but she's got a nice spring of rib and a nice topline and lovely texture and quality of coat.

There are twenty-two entered in the Bred-By Exhibitor Bitch class. One is a move-up, leaving us with twenty-one. Just two absentees in this Bred-By class. A big Bred-By Exhibitor Bitch class once again, a mixture of types, as usual in a class of this size. The two bitches at the head of the class are rather similar in type. The bitch that won the class has the advantage in maturity, spring of rib, topline with her arch in the correct place and her angle behind (Sylvan Evangeline). She's a very handsome bitch. For my druthers, I would like her just a little bit more feminine but she's not by any means a great big doggy bitch. I just think a little bit more refined in head. The second bitch is a very handsome bitch, not the greatest showing bitch in the world, lovely balance of bone to size; handsome balance in length to height (Rabrega Smokey Mountain Rain). The bitch that won the class has the advantage in bend behind and use of herself. The third bitch is a little different type, a little bit more feminine than the two that place above her (Felicia Of Brycehart). However, they had the advantage of neck set and attitude but this is a useful bitch and I would be glad to have her on another day. All four of the bitches that placed in this class are parti-colors. And the fourth bitch is a grey and white parti-color, mostly grey, very brindle handsome bitch behind; a lot of bend at both ends (Ridgeside Pasqua). She's really not terribly happy to be here but once she cheers up a little bit she uses herself handsomely. Her arch is in the right place and she's a handsome headed bitch and quite feminine. Nice bunch of bitches.

There are ten bitches entered in the American Bred Bitch class. There are two absentees in this class. In the competition between the four bitches that made the cut in this American Bred class, the first bitch is a white bitch with some sable marking (Samovar's Mystic). She has a lovely way of going around the ring, quite sound coming and going, very feminine and very pretty. Her loin is arched in the right place, nice amount of angulation behind. The second bitch is a little bit more bitch but by no means doggy, quite sound also (Mariza Rising Star Flr Nadian). I preferred the head and expression of the bitch that won the class. The third bitch is a bitch very typical, very typey (Aldemoor's Hijinx Of Beowolf, SC, FCh.). The two bitches that were placed ahead her were just a little sounder on the coming and going. The fourth bitch is a white bitch (Astara's Solitaire). I have the feeling she would be better outside, she tended to shorten her stride here in the indoor ring but she's a bitch who is very pretty in type with a lovely expression.

BITCHES, Open - CRITIQUE by Mrs. Anne Rogers Clark

Thirty-seven Open Bitches are entered, its 9:05 a.m. There appear to be only twenty-seven this morning. Really big Open Bitch class here, with all kinds of shapes and sizes and things to deal with. The bitch that stands at the head of this class, we have given a little bit to in balance and proportion as far as length to height, because she has so many things going for her (Sky Run Codie Grae). She's typical, she's feminine, she has angles at both ends. She has a beautiful face, correctly arched loin, takes the circle very, very easily and is very, very sound coming and going. She's a grey brindle and white bitch and she's very, very eye-filling. Second is a red bitch with white trim, maybe a little more aggressive on the move, maybe a little bit better in balance and proportion height to length but she gives away to the first bitch in angles particularly in front (Wyvern's Savanna Song). The same may be said for the third bitch who's very similar in type to the second bitch who is very similar in color. This bitch is bone thin but she's a hard bitch under your hand; she has shape over and under (Cernak's Lucky Charm). The two bitches ahead of her were in better show condition and the bitch that won the class is so beautifully feminine and with such a beautiful face. The fourth bitch once again is red with some white trim that matches my second and third bitches very nicely, perhaps just a little over fit but a bitch that deserved her placement in this class (Qamyo Sylvan Scarlettan, JC). Oddly enough my best quality in the Open Bitch Class came from the first half of the class and that's where most of my cuts came from.

The Veteran Dog class is next. First in the Veteran Dog class to a very handsome white dog with a few markings on him, in full coat moving and showing well (Ch. Majenkir Stolichnaya). Beautiful body, deep rib; a very handsome dog. Second to a very lovely dog that was very happy to be out (Ch. Balcones' Argus Jet, CD, FCh.).

Brace Class - CRITIQUE by Mrs. Anne Rogers Clark

We now have the Brace class. There are four braces entered. First in this Brace class to a pair of absolutely exquisitely open marked tri-colored dogs (Rabrega Crescent Moon and Rabrega Black Moon Rising II). They looked alike, they acted alike, they moved alike. Second to a black dog and black bitch with white trim (Ch. Wind 'n Satin Black Legacy and Ch. Wind 'n Satin Celestal Kristull). Even though they had "extra points for difficulty" (she had just come in season and the boy was taught to mind his business), the winning brace was just too tough for them to conquer. And the third brace was a very pretty brace of very feminine open-marked white and sable bitches (Sylvan Evangeline and Ch. Sylvan Zibeline ). The brace that won the class was just unbeatable here today.

CONFORMATION JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS by Mrs. Anne Rogers Clark:

It is Thursday March 12, 1992. We are at the Ramada Hotel in Houston, Texas. Our task today is to judge the Borzoi Club of America's National Specialty Show. We have a lovely entry, which will be spread over the next two days. We will do a critique of all four placements in each class, Winners Dog, Reserve Winners Dog, Winners Bitch, Reserve Winners Bitch and what goes on in Specials. I am Anne Rogers Clark.

Winners Dog on the basis of his substance, spring of rib, his ability to cover ground, his loin arched in the correct place was the Bred-By Exhibitor Dog (Shefaro Reyna's Emperador Fox). A very handsome dog and reserve to the very similar younger dog who won the Open Dog class (Silkenswift Cotopaxi, F.Ch.). A very interesting pair of dogs, I thought the Winners Class was a very high quality class of dogs.

It's Friday morning the 13th of March. We're here bright and early and our task is to do thirty-seven Open Bitches, three Veteran Bitches, fifty-six Best of Breed and Stud Dogs and Brood Bitches. It's a beautiful day outside, we are in this large well-lit ballroom inside and we're looking forward to a good day. The show has been opened for the second morning in a row by the soloist Barry Ellison, who has magnificently sung our National Anthem. After a performance like that we all have to be on our mettle!

Winners Bitch on the basis of all that she had going for her was the great brindle and white bitch (Sky Run Codie Grae). Ultimately feminine but with substance, beautiful length of neck and beautiful face. And reserve was that very handsome red bitch with the white markings particularly on her way of going from the side and her very correct level top skull (Wyvern's Savanna Song).

There are fifty-seven entered in Best Of Breed with one move-up which makes fifty-eight, plus Winners Dog, Winners Bitch, Veteran Dog and Veteran Bitch. Best Of Breed in this magnificent entry of Borzoi Specials is the lovely tri-colored bitch (Ch. Fox Run's Ivy Rose). She easily bested this handsome field. She to me is the happy combination of exquisite beauty, combined with great function. She's a great showman, she's in magnificent condition, she's perfectly beautiful from the side and then does not disappoint on her coming and going. She has a level top skull, she has the substance and strength and yet she's feminine. Best Of Opposite Sex to the very correct, very handsome white dog (Ch. Majenkir Arcticus). He also combined beauty with a great deal of utility. Very good coming and going, good level top skull, enough bone and substance to get his job done but elegant enough to appear very beautiful. Best Of Winners to the very, very pretty Winners Bitch (Sky Run Codie Grae). She also received an Award Of Merit. Thank you all - it was a pleasure for me.

FUTURITY JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS:

I would first like to thank the breeders of the futurity nominees for selecting me as their judge for the 1992 BCOA Futurity. It was a very great honor! And another thank you for bringing such tremendous quality to me! I've been to many specialties over the years and I've never seen so many good dogs in one place! This was one of the hardest jobs I've ever had! I have a new respect for judges. The dogs really can look different from inside the ring when you can actually put your hands on them. A lot of my choices almost came to "flipping a coin" and I would have loved to have given more than one "first" in most of the classes!

I was also impressed with the condition and temperaments of most of the puppies. Most were well trained and seemed to enjoy themselves. A few were going through the "teenage gawkies" and seemed to be all legs that weren't quite sure where to go. But they will probably still become beautiful adults when they mature. A few had missing teeth, some were a little too narrow for me and a few had restricted side movement but the overall quality was very impressive.

Towards the end of the night some of the puppies started getting tired - and I can't blame them; so did I! Some of them simply beat the others on stamina.

There was so much of similar types and colors that few of the pups really stuck in my mind. As I look through the catalog to see who I put up, I realize I was very consistent with littermates and cousins but I will mention my final winners.

My Best Junior Dog caught my eye the minute he came into the ring - Karitonova Creme De Cassis. He came from the 9-12 month class. He had beautiful side movement and was sound coming and going. He had nice type and was beautifully presented.

My choice for Best Senior Dog was Cornerstone Signatory. You had to put your hands on him to find him because of too much coat (wouldn't we love to have that problem on all our dogs) but underneath it all was a nice body with good movement and soundness.

My Best Junior Bitch was Majenkir Po Dusham Rubaiyat, from the 6-9 month class. She moved smoothly and soundly from all directions. My Best Senior Bitch was Nonsuch Vertigo, from the 21-24 month class! She was typey and beautiful moving.

So when these four dogs came back in and I had to choose one, it became the hardest choice of the evening! I moved them and moved them. I had to get extremely picky and ended up picking my Junior Bitch, Majenkir Po Dusham Rubaiyat fur Best In Futurity and Best Opposite was my Junior Dog, Karitonova Creme De Cassis. My stud dog choice was Am/Can Ch. Majenkir Stolichnaya, sire of Best Opposite In Futurity and the winner of the 9-12 month puppy bitch class. The Brood Bitch award went to the beautiful Ch. Golden Star's Jahkeet.

Again, thank you for choosing me. I really enjoyed myself and I only wish I could have given out more "firsts". All the breeders of these Futurity nominees should be very proud!
