General Specials CRITIQUE by Mrs. Lorraine M. Groshans:

Most people who attend specialties regularly - in any breed - tend to agree that quality in bitches always seems to surpass that in dogs. Rosemary Gregg judged the sweepstakes which was made up for the most part of the entries in the regular puppy classes (6-9, 9-12, 12-18) which I did the following day. In a quick conversation we had in an elevator during the specialty we found we were both impressed with the quality turnaround: However, when I came to the older classes - Bred-by, American Bred and Open - the bitches regained the advantage. The Winners and Reserve Winners bitches were superb examples of quality Borzoi.

The lovely dark cream-sable Sky Run Crown Victoria was Winners Bitch. She is a striking, eye-filling bitch of great quality. Aside from a very slight weakness in pastern she’s hard to fault standing or moving.

The Reserve Winners Bitch was the white and cream Iyengar’s Bliss. Usually there is something - particularly in the head - that gives a clue to the family background of a Borzoi. With this bitch, however you would have an impossible task as she is such a classic she’d fit into any “line”. Pure bliss! I found her femininity and lack of exaggeration in outline and movement very pleasing.

The red and white dog Sundance Blaise of Iyengar was Winners Dog. He was soundly put together and gaitd efficiently - with no wasted motion. He appeared somewhat immature but only due to the lack flash that a mature finished coat may give him later.

Rising Star Durak of Sunbarr, a gold youngster at what I understand was his first show was Reserve Winners Dog. He was as sound as the Winners Dog and lovely type The Winners Dog, however, was a shade more balanced and with a shorter loin presented a better silhouette.

And then there was the Best of Breed class! A show unto itself! So many of us as breeder-judges come away from ordinary Borzoi assignments in a state of depression over the state of our chosen breed. But for all of you who have felt this depression - I sure hope you were at Detroit. That class of 50-some Borzoi made your heart beat faster and your spirits soar with pride. The class was so spectacular! When several of us were in France last October we were impressed by the enthusiasm of the spectators at the Best of Breed ring. More than one of us expressed the wish that that sort of unrestrained spectator participation might happen here at our Borzoi specialties. That wish was granted a hundred times over in Detroit in 1990! You could feel the excitement and the emotion in the air. You could feel it build - and build - and build. I think even the dogs felt it as you could see them respond more - and more - and more. It was a SHOW in every sense. After several cuts, the group left in the ring numbered ten. Of those there were two specials dogs and two specials bitches for final consideration for BOB and BOS. The two dogs - Ch. P.O.S.H. Echovesna’s Islaev (from the Veterans class) and Ch. Lanel’s Kaitan Khanazar - have both proven themselves in the ring innumerable times and both were primed to put on the show of their lives. Every dog has an optimum trotting speed at which he looks his best. As the roar of the crowd rose, I think it encouraged Sly to go just beyond that speed resulting in looking just a bit less than his best. Deciding factors are often such tiny, tiny things. Kai was sent to Best after being put through a tough course, never faltering. With the two bitches - Ch. Sylvan Thistledown and Ch. Oaklara’s Elegant Tara - the decision was even more difficult (if it were possible to declare a tie, I would have in this instance). Both bitches were so well balanced - without any exaggerations - so sound moving. While they do vary a little in style, both styles are well within the confines of proper type and I found them both very appealing. The final nod went to Tara for BOS. The maturity of the Winners Bitch easily earned her BOW.

I am so pleased that BCOA has added the Award of Merit at specialties. With an entry as big as the one this year there are so many that deserve recognition. I would have liked to include the RWB but was told this wasn’t allowed Why, I wonder. The eight award winners received rosettes in the ring and certificates at the Saturday night BCOA/MBC banquet. It’s a shame that the Tournament of Champions was at Cobo Hall the same night as the banquet as it would have been nice to honor the owners of the BOB and BOS Borzoi as well as those owners of the other Award of Merit dogs.

CONFORMATION JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS by Mrs. Lorraine M. Groshans:

When Shen Smith accepted the dual position of show chairman/show secretary for the 1990 BCOA National Specialty, I’m sure she never expected such an overwhelming response to her publicity mailings and the premium lists. An entry of over 300 Borzoi just in breed! Many people have claimed it was the largest entry ever of Borzoi. Was it? I’ll leave it to the historians and statisticians. All I really know is that it was the most fantastic specialty I have ever attended and I thank all the members who gave me the honor of officiating at the show and those who supported the entry. I’m sure that all who attended also thank Shen and her committee for the five memorable months worth of events cleverly scheduled into five days.

It did seem fitting that this record entry came about in Detroit. When I first started showing Borzoi, entries of 38 or 40 at national specialties from only the immediately surrounding states were considered exciting. Then, thanks to the supreme efforts of Grace Conally and the MBC in 1966, specialties for Borzoi suddenly changed immensely. Not only did the entries increase in number but also the number of states represented increased. Will anyone showing at that time forget that show in Detroit with the then surprising entry of something around 68 under Kay Finch, the fantastic trophies which included puppies as well as silver, cash and artwork and the exciting pre and post show parties? Specialties at the Detroit location have continued since then to lead the way in entries and participation. Detroit, of course, has a built-in advantage being rather centrally located on the Borzoi map.

While I did take notes on most individual clogs in addition to my normal scoring procedure, I prefer not to do an individual critique here. Instead, I would rather give my general impressions on the overall entry and the trends I see happening over the past several years.

In spite of what others have said on the subject, I feel that there has been an improvement in the layback of shoulder in Borzoi. It’s in the upper arm that I’ve seen no improvement - and maybe even a downhill trend. The Borzoi should stand “under himself’ not “in front of himself’. The humerus must slope back from the point of shoulder so that the end at the elbow is in a vertical line dropped from the highest point of the scapula. Since most breeders have made improvements in shoulder layback in their breeding stock due to positive applications of information disseminated in printed articles and in seminars, they should be able to do just as well in correcting the problems with length and slope of the humerus.

The great majority of toplines were correct with a well-balanced slope to the croup. This applies to the toplines in the mature dogs and not necessarily to the puppies which can change as we all know with maturity.

The hindquarters have remained about the same over the past several years. There are still too many short second thighs and poorly defined (straight, that is) hock and stifle angles. There were a few more than usual over-angulated stifles, in some cases accompanied by sickle hocks.

I found fewer even bites and more scissor bites and applaud this trend - if indeed it is a trend. The Borzoi standard allow for a lot of variation in head styles all within the correct type. At this specialty there were representatives of almost all correct head styles. The number of exaggerated (too close to convex head profiles) heads I’ve been seeing for several years now were not much in evidence in Detroit. There is a strong possibility that the decreasing number of exaggerated heads and the change from even to scissor bites are related. Several dogs were missing one or two teeth but only two mouths were “empty” - missing six or more. So even dentition is improving.

Some tales should have happy ending, some tails should NOT. A gaily carried tail affects somewhat Borzoi function and it very definitely does affect the ideal picture of the breed. I noticed quite a few high tails at this show. In at least three close decisions the bad tail carriage determined the final placings. March is the best month of the year for Borzoi coats so it was not surprising that coats in general were profuse and of a soft, silky texture. A few had questionable texture and if tests could have been run on these, it’s possible they might have shown those coats containing unnatural substances. A word of advice: if you don’t know the proper use of various grooming products, don’t use them. Borzoi appetites must have improved lately - and all of us know what happens when dog or man eats too much. Too much weight and too much coat were both evident in some entries although not necessarily both in the same dog of course. Exhibitors seem to vigorously resist changing both of these conditions even though the changes might greatly enhance the picture and/or the movement of the dog in the ring.

I understand it’s Florida for 1991. Many Floridjans were present in Detroit so they know what they have to live up to. I’m sure they’ll do a superb job. Good luck, all exhibitors. And, Nadine - I wish you as much joy and just pure fun and pleasure in 1991 as I have just enjoyed in Detroit in 1990.
